Need a refresher on creating a gain envelope within a clip ONLY

Seems I never had a problem with envelopes until X1 and X2...now, in x2, I haven't found a way to create a volume/gain envelope only within a clip; even a 'clip envelope' runs the entire track.  I am able to delete all the unwanted envelop line outside the clip but surely I'm missing something here.  IOW, Clip envelopes and track envelopes exhibit the same behavior, so what do I need to know?  Thanks,

I quite often clone something like that to its own track, it's easier.

I'm not sure how you're trying to draw a gain envelope on a clip, but I always have success by clicking the dropdown on the track header where "Clips" is the default, and selecting "Clip Automation" and then "Gain".

Any gain envelope that I draw on the clip stays with the clip when it's moved, every time. (After drawing in the volume envelope, you've got to change the dropdown back to "Clips" if you want to move the clip around.) As I was typing this response I went through the process step-by-step to make sure I'm remembering it correctly. If that doesn't work for you, something is seriously wrong.

FWIW, yes, adding an envelope to one clip will add the same to all clips on that track - I believe this was a long-standing user request that CW finally included in the X series.   But just because envelopes display on the other clips doesn't mean they have any effect, because only the one selected will be modified.

I find the quickest way to add a clip gain envelope is by vertically Ctrl+dragging on the clip; the envelope is added and on the cursor, ready to be moved.  Once the cursor is released the track's Edit Filter goes right back to clips mode.   Pretty slick.
