You can have a lot of projects open. I make a template for the session before I go to do a live recording and I do a "save as" of 30 of them. Each will be numbered in sequence.
Example 01-Fudgetones. 02-Fudgetones etc.
At the session I open them (important) using the file menu.
You minimize each one and they will go to the bottom of the screen as little windows boxes all nicely lined up across the screen.
Make sure Sonar and the project window are floating, not full screen.
So now you are ready to roll without interruptions.
I have a template for creating my backing tracks that has all my favorite soft synths and stuff dialed in. It also has a few audio tracks for real bass and scratch vocals etc. So if I find a MIDI file that might have usable drums I will open the template first, then open the MIDI file too, always use the file menu. I think if you open from a folder outside Sonar it will close the first project window and open the new one.
The MIDI files open dumb and you won't hear anything until you insert a soft synth. Therefore the template.
I re-size the MIDI file window to the lower half of the screen so I can see the top 6 or so tracks of my template screen.
Looking at the MIDI file project window I make note of the tempo and set my templates tempo to match. Now figure out the track instrument assignments, they are often labels already.
Now I drag and drop the MIDI tracks into my template tracks paying careful attention to where they were starting on the time line and which instruments as I go. I only keep the drums anyways so I don't care about the rest.. that's just to get the ball rolling.
There you go, the song will now play using your pre selected sounds.
Sonar is a Windows based app. Drag and drop is standard fair for all software that I use. I think the number one problem is people still have never figured out how to use windows. They work full screen etc.
