SOS. Mackie Control all of a sudden not showing up in X1

I'm not sure if something went bad on my Mackie Control.
I'm [still] running x1 on an XP 2.66 Core 2 duo (no flames, please, I am upgrading as soon as I'm done with this project.)
In the past, I would have to go into preferences and re-check the Control to use 'USB' and then it would come on.
Now, it is not doing so. I know at some level it is seeing it, because when I pull the usb cable from the back of the Mackie Control, a pop up appears asking me if I want to reassign the outputs, or click no to remember them.
Is there something I'm missing?

    Nothing? No matter. Just as inexplicably, it all of a sudden started showing up.
    Par for the course with this computer....
