After 10 years in the US I have discovered Marmite again
I haven't eaten it for over a decade....then I saw it hidden on a low shelf in Whole Foods and I had to have it. Now I am once again addicted to this borderline disgusting delicacy. Have to stop eating it so close to bedtime though...that stuff gives you mad crazy dreams....I think it's the vitamin B6. Last night I dreamed I was in this wacky House Of Fun at a party in which I met almost everyone I'd ever known, and I felt weird all of today.

Recently found this at our nearest Whole Food. It's one of the prime ingredients you need to make a poutine - one of Quebec's favorite junk dish. It's basically just french fries, cheese curds and brown gravy. While it's hard to find the right french fries and the right gravy, the missing ingredient is pretty much always cheese curds. Since we've shared the good news w/ our Quebecers friends here in Vegas, it looks as if Whole Food cannot keep up w/ the demand. Not that I'd start making my own regularly, mind you. I eat one poutine a year when we visit Quebec, and that's as much as I dare include in my diet. But I sometimes like to eat a few of those curds.

The 'poutine' looks quite appetizing. I would have no troubles trying that. Now the Marmite is questionable. Do you spread that on bread, toast perhaps?

I remember when I first moved to Australia and someone gave me toast with Vegemite... I was about to slap then silly before I realized that my urge to spit was much greater than my anger. I still blame them for it...

I find marmite is best spread on either toast or Ryvita.

Vegemite is far superior to Marmite. Marmite is just a poor derivative. Bit like Coke and Pepsi. These things just have to be used in moderation. If you are going to make a Vegemite sandwich it can be nice with good quality bread, nice butter and just the correct amount of Vegemite spread the correct way.

It's similar. Although I think Marmite is stronger? They're both the whiskey equivalent of a spread. An acquired taste

Marmite, Vegemite, all that stuff... I'm Norwegian - I'll never be able to eat any of it! I'll have some brunost (brown cheese) in stead! But I'll pass on the Smalahove

I like gjetost! (that's just a different--older?--name for brunost). I'm in complete agreement on the Smalahove, too.

Your Norwegian knowledge continues to impress me! It's actually "geitost", pronounced "gjetost" many places, and means goat cheese. When I talked about goat cheese in Australia they gave me feta cheese;) but geitost is still commonly used around the country except here in the east where we call it Brunost. I suppose brunost a more modern name for it, but I think it was a new name for it a couple of hundred years ago;)
Foreigners seem to like it a lot though;)

I can actually find it here in California every now again. The brand I usually find is called Ski Queen. It still says Gjetost on the label. It's a little sweet, like Marmite, some wouldn't like it. I don't think I'd use it on a ham and cheese sandwich or on a burger. It's just fine by itself on a slice of bread or toast.

Yeah, my friends in Oz find it too, but I have never seen the Ski Queen any where here in Norway. It's probably called Gjetost because of some licensing issues or whatever. It's actually a dessert cheese but it's perfect on bread, especially toast! I wouldn't compare it to Marmite though, but that could just be me ;)

I didn't mean to make a direct comparison to the 'Mites. Just that many people prefer savory cheese and may find a sweet cheese like gjetost an "acquired taste".
