Sonar X1 Essential to Sonar X2 Studio or Producer - Questions

I recently had to get a new computer because of motherboard problems on the old laptop running sys 7.  My new laptop is, of course, Sys 8 with 4gb ram and tons of harddrive, AMD E1-1200 APU 1.4 GHz HD Display, 64 bit operating system and X64 based processor.
I've been using Sonar X1 Essential successfully on a similar laptop using Sys 7.  I'm not a pro.  I just enjoying creating midi music for my own entertainment and I do it well enough to satisfy me and that's all I'm really going for.

So my questions are not real technical, but your assistance would certainly be appreciated.

1.  Is it possible to buy an upgrade to X2 that Cakewalk has recently had on sale to go from X1 Essential to X2 Essential or Studio...or is there a completely separate self-contained Sonar X2 entire program that I need to buy?

2.  Is Sonar X2 Essential or better compatible with Win Sys 8?

3.  I have a number of softsynths - Dem Pro, Cakewalk Studio and other basics that worked fine on X1 Essential and I've bought extra sounds for all of them at one time or another.  Are all of these compatible with Sonar X2 Essential or Studio?

4.  I've been fooling around with the midi stuff since I was using a McIntosh in the early 1990s, but I'm still a rank amateur.  As I said, the goal is entertaining myself and making a little music that I like.  So, is going from Sonar X1 Essential to X2 Studio a little overkill for what I like to do or should I stick with X2 Essential (if there's an upgrade for it).

All of these questions are precipitated by my having to buy a new computer with Windows 8.  If there were a way to make Sonar X1 Essential compatible with Sys 8, I would just continue on like I have been.  Assuming there's not, where do I go from here to be Sys 8 compatible so I an still play at my amateur level?

Thanks in advance to all who respond.  My experience in the past has been that everyone is great on here and very helpful...even though you all talk way over my head:)

To further complicate your decision, X3 should be released within the next month. I used Essential and loved it. I also really like what additional features I have in producer. If the cost won't hurt you you should go to X3 producer.

    1) All upgrades are just special prices for the full product. All registered users of Cakewalk products qualify for upgrade pricing. The actual price depends on the product you own and the product you want to buy.
    2) X1 should run fine on Win8. X2 is the first version that required Win7 or Win8.
    3) Yes
    4) Maybe stick with X1 for a while and see if your needs exceed the product.

I recently had to get a new computer because of motherboard problems on the old laptop running sys 7.  My new laptop is, of course, Sys 8 with 4gb ram and tons of harddrive, AMD E1-1200 APU 1.4 GHz HD Display, 64 bit operating system and X64 based processor

As i see of your spec on the laptop, its not the most " powerful " one ( 1.4Ghz )

When running software based VSTi's and plugins , you will find out that it will require quite some CPU power.
after laying down a few midi tracks with softsynths, the computer starts to get hiccups ;-)
you may also to prevent that raise the audio buffer to compensate for it, resulting in
larger latency, when you try to lay another track down, making it almost impossible to
play in beat, or play at all !

I personally have an old laptop at 2 GHZ, with 2Gb of ram, and win 8 64bit
even that one struggle, when i start to load some tracks and VSTi's and , vst plugins.
So of course im not using that for any " Music production ", but of course it is good to have
when i need to go someplace to record a few audiotracks down, and transfer it to my main
    Stationary computer if needed.

Another thing is to consider to get a External USB soundcard if you not already have one !
an external soundcard will help a bit, because it will take some load off the CPU itself
Also using Asio driver, that comes with the external soundcard.

onboard soundcards is no solution for " music  Production ", even with the " Asio4all " driver.
To find out , just start to load up several miditracks and vsti's, to check how mutch you can load the cpu
of your computer, before it start to get those hiccups and so forth ;-)

If you can do what you want with the software you have at present time, i would recommend that
you continiue using it for now, and maybe uppgrade Sonar later ? but of course if you want to upgrade
if theres someting  you need  in the other Sonar version, then do it.

I am just saying this, so you are aware of those things

you have got your questions very well answered by : scook in the post above.

wish you good luck with the music making ;-)

Thanks for the responses.  I think I will take the advice of scook for now and try to run X1 on Win 8.  Since it's listed for Win XP and 7, it didn't occur to me that it would run on Win 8...but it's worth trying.

I think I will eventually upgrade to X2 or X3 studio or producer at some point, even though many of the features on those are far beyond my capabilities.  But it will be fun learning.
Thanks again.  Look forward to hearing others' thoughts as well.
