MIDI Keyboard Plays VS-700 Console
Without warning and without my making any changes to Preferences, when I play a MIDI keyboard, it triggers lights and functions on the V-Studio 700 Console. Something is somehow getting screwed up on its own in Preferences so that any MIDI notes from a USB keyboard are seen as MIDI events on the Console. Ideas? By the way, ever since I have had X1, Preferences change themselves and MIDI Ins/Outs and Audio Ins/Outs frequently will suddenly be screwed up.

THanks, Zo, but trying to understand how Preferences should be. VS-700 is listed under Control Surface. Not sure if it should be listed in both the in and out, or only one. Also, not sure if it should be checked as both and input and output device in the MIDI devices. Suddenly, things just act weird and it is not clear what has changed. To make it worse, USB keyboards sometimes work and sometimes don't and when they don't, I have to reboot the PC.

@Konradh - is it possible that your USB-connected keyboards are being disabled for inactivity, by Windows? That is the default behavior for Windows, and you can change that to NOT allow Selective Disabling of USB Devices, either through Power Options - advanced - or through Device Manager (for Device Manager you would go to each USB hub and bring up properties, then go to Power Management). Hey, Bob. I have looked and looked and cannot find that "USB Sleep" option. I don't have any USB-related stuff under "Power Management." In Device Manager all appears to be OK. Very weird. Thanks, though.

OK - try this: Control Panel>System and Security>Power Options>High Performance>Change Plan Settings>Change Advanced Power Settings> Scroll down to see USB Settings, expand that and you will see USB selective suspend setting. Expand that and change the setting to Disabled, then click apply and you can then close out of it all. The above is one method of telling Windows NOT to disable USB devices after a period of inactivity. This may keep your devices recognized by Sonar. Give it a try and post back. By the way, I use the High Performance power plan, and have everything set to stay on all the time. The only 'green' I ever liked was Green-Eyed Lady. Bob Bone

I have not figured out the USB keboard issue, but here is what is going on with the MIDI keyboard controlling the console: • I have an ongoing issue with INs and OUTs (both MIDI and Audio) being set to different values when I open a project. I also sometimes see devices checked or unchecked differently in Preferences. I have no idea what is causing that. • In this case, a MIDI track I was using as reference only and that was not output to any device, and changed itself to output to Console. Since its input was OMNI, anything played on the keyboard went to this track and affected the console--even though Echo was off and a different track was in focus. • I think it Preferences VS-700 was selected (correct). I think I want VS-700 as Input and NONE as Output, but I am not sure. I think I only need VS-700 as Output if I am syncing an external device (such as my old VS-1680). This was a simple fix once it was identified, but it is still quite annoying that tracks change their I/O on their own. Sometimes this requires me to go through 30-40 tracks one by one, checking and resetting the I/O. I think this corruption happens as the project is loading because I can't imagine it happening while the project is idle on the hard disk. This is just one of the many things that has been odd ever since X1 was installed. I have a number of bugs that no one else on the forum seems to experience which makes me question if something was wrong with the initial install. Regarding the USB keyboard, the Power Management options don't appear exactly as others have described, but I did find that Sweetwater has a custom power plan set up on this PC, and it seems to be set so that USB devices never go off, but I will have to post a screen image later to show what it looks like.

Well, as I indicated, you can also go to Device Manager, expand the USB Universal Serial Controllers in the device tree, then click on each HUB, then click on Power Management, and make sure you REMOVE the check from the box that tells Windows it is OK to turn off this device to save power. Do this for EACH hub. The Power Management button will not appear on non-hub entries. Inputs and outputs have defaults when you do not assign them to real things. Bob Bone
