Speaking of TASCAM and re-mixes of tape based songs

Well, kind of.

I digitized all my old TASCAM 80-8 recordings, that usually had a sync track to drive Voyetra Sequencer Plus Gold, and a while ago for fun I did a revamp of one of those songs called "Look What You've Done" in SONAR using some of my new toys.

On THIS PAGE I included both versions.

I've got a friend who has a 24 track Tascam setup with 1" tape. Those old 2" machines were pretty nice. Maybe the new Pro-channel tape sim will be a 2" Tascam!

Besides the new toys, it is noticeable that you picked up some mixing skills over the years. Nice!
I had a 6 track cassette recorder to work with in this days (forgot the brand) how bizarre is that...
B.t.w, what is a Voyetra Sequencer, and what happened to the gold...?

Very cool Bapu! Can definitely hear the difference. That's great that you have all that material digitized so you can rework it. Thanks for letting us hear it!

Yes, great piece of work. I like them both, the original and the rework. They both have their own unique sound. Goes to show just what toys can do when you have a good recording to work with. As to your song, great original arrangement, instrumentation, vocals, lyrics and a nice original mix. For back in 86 this would be top notch for a recording. The new digitalized version just takes the song to the level of perfection we can get out of todays toys if we know how to use them. Very nicely done all the way around.

Voyetra Sequence Plus Gold was a PC DOS based sequencer. I did jump to Cakewalk until ProAudio 4 but never had a powerful enough computer to run SONAR until SONAR 7 (even though I bought every upgrade from PA4, except SONAR 2).

Thanks, for my modern mixing skills I have to thank Jonbouy, Danny Danzi, Alexooesthoek and Beagle plus a few others along the way.

    Hi Ed,

You did a great job cleaning up the old tape mix.  The new one is fuller (more full?) and has more punch.

Hey Ed, I'm having the same problem as Frank.  I can't get either to play.
    I'll keep trying.

@ theguitarplayer (John)- Thanks for the listen. For me it takes a comparison like that to actually hear my progress because at the heart of it I think I'm doing the same things I did back in the 80s (the 90s were kind of lost to my music and concentrated more on my son's music).

@ Frank & Freddy - I wish I knew why some have trouble with Soundcloud and others do not.

Nice tune, very special, not common to hear this kind of music today.
Love the bass, sounding like a pitched up sound , like a fast tape speed ;D "starting about 25 sec into the song"

Who's singing?  Nice.  You know, I couldn't tell which recording I liked better.  It is a good song and well played but each method had something I liked.  I wish I could pinpoit it but I'm not that versed in the mixing thing.  I do ok but am not good enough to advixe.  As always I think the bass should be more present but that's probably just me.  Interesting stuff, Ed!

Thanks for listening. I'm 99% sure that's my Alembic bass. Recorded DI into my Tascam 312 console.

I remember writing that song about my (then) troubled step-son. He is in much better shape some 20 odd years later. A dad, a husband and being responsible.

Ed, you are to be congratulated for preserving your tapes.  I, too, started with an 80-8 and moved up to a TSR-8 which is in impeccable condition today.  Unfortunately, my cases of Ampex 456 Grand Master tapes didn't hold up even after baking them.  You greatly improved the mixes, imo.  Well done.

    All the best,

Hey Bapu, great remix!  The rhythm tracks sound much punchier now.  Only thing I'd say is that maybe the vocals (and possibly rhythm guitar) are a bit too hot in the new version.  It's possible there are too many parts competing for the high-mid freqs?

It's always nice to hear old songs get new life like this.  Nice work!
