Wow! Windows finally has its Garage Band killer app! Is there a limit on plugin instantiations or any other such thing?

No limits. It has all the core workflow features. It's been supersized as have been all versions.

I'm pretty sure Music Creator did, at least at some point. But seriously, for a DAW under $100, this is epic. Think. Presonus Studio One Artist which at $99 allows no outside plugins at all, or Cubase Artist, which at over $200 still has track count limitations.
Actually, Essential is $50 if you register a free product and then get the "upgrade for registered Cakewalk customers".
So yeah, like. I said, this is epic.

Free products don't count as a registered customer. Music Creator, Project5., SONAR le, etc would count.
It also has VST3 and 64-bit mix engine. It could probably compete on specs with many of the flagship DAWs.
That's why it's called SONAR X3.

That's a change. A while ago, I tried registering free products in a clean account and then almost-buying "any cakewalk customer" upgrades and it didn't balk. Sorry, I have a sycophantic affinity toward beta-testing the store. :)

Since Sonar X3 is a core product would the prochannel fx from x2 producer and the separately purchased ones work?

SONAR X3 doesn't have the ProChannel. That's available when you upgrade to SONAR X3 Studio or Producer. Studio has two ProChannel modules but you can buy more Producer has 8 including the new Tape Emulator and the QuadCurve EQ Zoom. And you can add more as well. If you were to upgrade to SONAR X3 Studio, your modules would all work. When we announce you should look at the comp chart and see what's worth spending the extra money on.

Personally I will go for the full enchilada. I was asking because they are several forumites expressing frustration about not getting another x2 update. I was just thinking of a less expensive way forward for them if they are more interested in the core improvements than the added plugs. I am looking forward to release and the flood of excited posts as well as the to be expected bug reports I'm hoping the few issues I have with x2 are sorted.

@Tom Riggs, an excellent idea for those who balk at the notion of paying for the full release of X3 - for whatever their reasons. Bob Bone

I guess the number of buses are still limited but the drop of "Essential" and changing the number of plugins, etc. to unlimited are great news for someone like me who proudly uses the Essential version with mostly third-party plugins. Thanks!

I'm saving for Producer, as usual, but it looks like they really did raise the bar for the baseline version. Well done.
