More with Rik - Butterflies 2013, 2013 with Rik, 2006 with Rik

Not a synthesizer in hearing (well there wasn't when I first posted this).

A little acoustic number Butterflies just the Wookiee on nylon guitar

Comments and crits welcome

Edit 1
Our very own Rik had a noodle over this and this is what we got Butterflies featuring Rik

Edit 2
Or this is how it sounded back in 2006 Butterflies 2006 when I was not so brave.

Edit 3
Rik heard the 2006 version and he noodled some more Butterfly 2006 featuring Rik

Hi John, nice one, I enjoyed playing along.  Maybe you could add a lead line on top of this ? Or, since you're playing D-shapes, add some notes with your pinky ?

Thanks Rik this was/is a bit of fun I wrote this way back when I first got a guitar and was learning to play and discovered shapes.  There is another version with synths and percussion bass line and a lead, but I was recently given an old Spanish nylon, it is actually a Spanish made guitar, which inspired me to have a go at playing as written.

Thanks again for listening and if you fancy having a go at adding something over the top give me a PM.

Nice little noodle of a song. We all start at the beginning of our new experiences, then we learn to start over. Nice little learner and fun tune. You have come a long way since then. Nice piece. Enjoyed.

    Hey there, Wookster!

Beautiful playing and nice, warm acoustic tone on this classy little instrumental, John!

Sometimes it's just nice to get back to the basics and hear something in the raw form that it was written in.  I think it creates an honest, solemn feel that portrays the original emotion that sparked the initial creativity.

Great stuff, my friend thanks for sharing!

Hi Freddy seems Soundcloud has been giving some/many people some problems if you are still interested it can be found at Reverberation nation in my signature link.  Thanks for trying to have a listen.

Mr Bob thank you very much for popping in and giving my little tune a listen, thank you for your kind words and encouragement.  I have been spending more time lately getting to grips with the guitars I have and as I have now got ten collections of tunes on CD using mainly synthesisers I thought I should try and by a little more organic.

Thanks to all whom have listened.

I liked the feel of this one, John.  Good melody line and nice instruments.  OK, I see I didn't listen to the latest.  I'm going back in.  Don't try to stop me!    OK, SO ON BUTTERFLIES, I would have liked to hear it with your other instruments.  Rik does a great job but I liked the instruments in the 2006 version.  Did I miss something?  Were they supposed to be mixed?  Can they be combined?

Thanks Warren appreciate you lending me your ears.

    There are three versions.

    1. I did recently just me and a nylon acoustic guitar.
    2. The acoustic guitar with our very own Rik staring over the top
    3. The 2006 version which was recorded in an old version of SONAR 2 or 3 when I had very little idea of what I was doing playing an Epiphone steel strung acoustic.

I got my first guitar in about 1979 did very little with it for about 20 years then Ms Wookiee encouraged me and it went down hill from there.

I think the solo acoustic version was nice, but Rik's additional lead work really made the song shine.  Great work, both John and Rik!  Very sweet, organic sound.

That being said, I have to admit I still prefer the older version myself.  I just love the silky smooth synth backgrounds and overall sound, regardless of the string squeaks.

John, I envy you for your understanding of synths.  Back in the '80s I didn't have the foresight to look past my guitar and bass.  Nowadays, I appreciate the innovation of sound synthesis much more, but unfortunately I don't have the money or storage space for a lot of old hardware synths (although that would be fun if I could!).  So instead of that I'm grateful that recent software synths have become so excellent (and instructive).  In the last year or so I've been absolutely loving exploring analog modeling soft synths like NI's Massive (3 main oscillators, plus LFOs, filters, envelopes, noise, modulation, etc.), Cakewalk's z3ta+2, and several others.  I've only scratched the surface, and I have a lot to learn, but I'm looking forward to it all. :)

I do like your guitar work as well, but I sincerely hope you continue to produce your own excellent brand of atmospheric and introspective electronic/synthetic music.

    Hi John,
I still can't get SoundCloud to work, so thanks for the Reverbnation link.  I listen to both versions and liked them both.  The early one had a nice full sound and the newer on really captured a very soft comforting feeling.  I'm glad I don't have to choose between them.

Thanks for the tip John.  As a side note, I have recently been considering changing my MIDI controller, which is currently a Roland A-500 Pro.  I like the feel and response of the key bed, but I'd like to get a 61-key board.  Besides that, the drum pads are pretty bad, and the knobs and sliders are kind of small for my hands.  Also, I prefer something with a Modulation WHEEL, not the spring-loaded joystick that I've currently got on the Roland board.

Anyway, one of the boards I looked seriously at was the Arturia Key Lab 61.  I really wanted to like it but the key bed felt extremely soft/slushy (implying a lack of quality/durability).  That board comes with the Analog Lab software (normally costs $89), which I thought was a nice selling point.  I would consider purchasing that separately if you think it's worthwhile?  Or should I hold out for a bigger collection like the V-Collection, for $399?  Which of the Arteria synth packs do you have and would recommend?

    Hi Walt

Up until recently I owned the following Arturia Synths, which I had purchased individually,
    Modular V 2, ARP 2600V 2, CS80V 2, Prophet V 2, and the Analog Lab.
Actually the Prophet V came with the CS80 V on a buy 1 get one free deal.

Then earlier this year Arturia made me an offer I could not refuse which was the V Collection for a very silly price, less than half full price, which added.

Oberheim SEM V, the Jupiter 8V2, the Mini V, the Spark VDM, the Wurlitzer V and the Analog laboratory.  If you can stretch to the V-Collection I would highly recommend it.  The Analogue Laboratory and the Analog Lab allow you to layer two of the synths which can result in some very amazing sounds.

    Hi Walt

Up until recently I owned the following Arturia Synths, which I had purchased individually,
    ...

Thanks again John.  I fear I've hijacked your "song" thread and made it into a "gear" thread.  I will send you a PM to continue this chat privately.  And now to return this to being a "song" thread...

I see you posted a new version of the old version of Butterflies.  I think this is the best of all!  I love Rik's lead work over the top of the synths.  I love the deep reverb on his guitar as well.  A fantastic collaboration!!

Hey Rik, it seems the people on this board are not as enthusiastic about ambient/electronic music as they are about pop/rock and folk songs.  But there are a few of us around who dig it.  I, for one, really enjoyed your work!  And there are a few other lurkers that pop out from time to time.  They'll be by to listen soon I'm sure. :)

Love what Rik did with the new version... very nice...

I like the original '06 version best with the synth bass... sounds like my old ARP Odyssey...
    Love the arpeggios at 1:45...
I also like what Rik did on that but, I wouldn't bring in his part until after the 1st chorus, and mixed a little more back...
This is eery nice to listen to this morning...
Some day, I may post some of my synth mixes from the mid '70s, but all I have left was mixed down to cassettes and don't know if they even play any more... I know my tape deck doesn't...   Great work guys...
