X3 upgrade looks very good for the microphone players...for MIDI/softsynths not so much
I can see how recordists would want the new version just for the chance to replace take lanes with comping. Producer is chock full of goodies for audio editing. But for those few of us who do linear sequencing with highly programmable softsynths (as opposed to physical instrument samplers or emulators) there is even less than usual. A full purchase for a new user at 500 bucks is a great bargain with a re-issue of all of the synths the people who have been buying upgrades since before Pro Audio have collected at one time. I have lost count of the number of copies/licenses I have for the venerable Cakewalk synths. And loop construction improvements are something I have no use for.
Yes there is some stuff from AAS, but not Tascam (I already own it anyway). Instead you get organ and guitar emulators (which I would never buy).
Admittedly people who use microphones primarily to capture samples of usually non-musical sounds, and control timing pitch and tone at the MIDI or synth level represent a very small segment of Cakewalk's market. And upgrade pricing is very reasonable. The difference between Studio and Producer is only 50.00 after all. But aside from being able to find tracks better with color coding there is nothing awesome for the MIDI geeks here.
