DIRT- cheap synths?

Are there any DIRT cheap synths ($75 and less) out there? Like, I'm looking for anything- the crap of the litter. As long as its no random tone generator, I'm interested. Even better, $50 and less.

one place for sure. although I'm almost wondering about ones that regularly go for ridiculously low prices. I guess I'll be checking locally, but if anyone has any offers, I'm open.

real synths ? go to local pawn shops or cash convertors etc.. but the decent ones from late 70's / 80's go for a lot of money these days. people are clued up to what they should cost.. if you had gone to yard sales etc back in the day you might have got lucky.

craigslist often has less than $100 synths.  they're "consumer" grade synths and not much more than GM tones.

I sold a PSR-293 on CL for $100 about a year ago.  it has more sounds than GM, has USB connection for MIDI, has a song sequencer.  quite a lot for a cheap keyboard.  others on CL were comparable.

On that note, idk if its even be worth it to try to drop less than $200 for a real synth. I'm surprised at the 'relatively' low cost of those hardware vst hosts. I'm working on getting my netbook fixed too, I may run something on Linux or a lightweight XP and see how that goes.

What is a good starter synth?

David I have been giving your situation some thought. If I were starting out with limited budgets I would be investing in a total VST situation. The reason is that there for a start are a heap of free VST's. One great one being Superwave P8 for example. Light on CPU use, very powerful, looks a little like a Roland analog synth and can sound like it too. So much music can be created now from just virtual instruments alone and free ones at that. Then invest in one or two paid ones like Alchemy or UHE or Zebra etc.. There are so many great new VST's being released all the time.

And classic synths like Moog or Oberheim etc are being so well  recreated in software it is not worth having the machines themselves. I had them all and they are creating all sorts of maintenance problems these days. They are not worth what they are going for today either. They have just attracted some sort of stigma. A lot of 90's instruments are very difficult to get parts for and some parts are failing now from that era. Don't waste $4000 on an Oberheim when the VST sounds incredible for like $59. I have owned an OBXa and know the sound of it very well. This plugin is amazing and sounds exactly like it, I am pretty flawed as to how good it is. This shakes the floor just like mine did. All 12 oscillators on one note opening up. This is just an example.

Music first, then performance then tools etc..

If you do save up some money I would invest in something like a late 90's workstation that you might score for $500 or less. Something like a Kurzweil K2000 maybe optioned up with some extra memory and sounds etc. (better still is the PC3 if your budget can go higher) Still way powerful and can do a lot. Learn to drive it and you will get years of enjoyment and you can produce endless amounts of music. A synth like this can be multi timbral and still sound amazing doing 16 parts at once all with its own effects too. It lightens the load from your computer and also acts as a controller talking to your computer inputting your playing into your VST's

Other options might be a Roland Fantom or Korg workstation of some kind. Then maybe invest in a small analog synth if you wanted to be able to play with knobs fiddling with the sound while it plays etc.. You can set up modern controllers to control VST's too and so much expression can go in that way too. You might pick up a bargain at some store as well. The synth should be something a little higher than a home keyboard type thing too if you can manage it. Just some ideas.

Please allow me to revisit this semi-stale thread, if I may. Jeff is onto something. There are lots of VST synth plug-ins around. Go visit pluginboutique.com and take a look at what they have to offer. At the main page click on the big blue rectangle on the right hand side that says "Free Plugins." In addition to all sorts of effects and processing plugins, they also have about a dozen or so free synth plugins. TO d/l any you have register. They will push you to register for one year for x amount of money, but you don't have to. A free registration gives you apparently unlimited access to the free plugins they have. I d/l'd a bunch just a couple of days ago. I want to be able to install the VST compatible ones in a common VST plugin directory so any of my programs that support VST plugins will have access to them.

Look, I'm assuming your $95 budget includes the fact that you already own a computer. Okay? If you go to eBay and search around, you can find older pieces of music production and recording software for very cheap.   Something that was the latest and greatest five years ago, but which might now be five upgrades in the past can sell for quite cheap.  There are other deals where you can get fresh production software for free. Check out Presonus's deal on Studio One. They offer a free, uncrippled copy. It even lets you save files, it just isn't as full featured as the other versions.  I just d/l'd a copy a few days ago, and I tell ya what, it is an interesting piece of software. It kinda reminds me of both Sonar and Fruity Loops -- somewhere in the middle between those two extremes. Here's a link that describes Studio One Free and what all it contains:

So, there ya go. You've got your audio/midi production/recording software and a bunch of VST plugins, which include about a dozen soft synths for the grand total cost to you of $0.00. Hey, not too shabby, you ask me.

    Best,

    Michael

He  has all he needs already. Hope he moved the audio interface to the top of the wish list and scrapped the USB mike idea.
People read about the old synths and get gear lust. Yawn.
