Using Sonar 4 and 8.5 projects in X3 - what can you expect?

Hi
What is your experience overall when using older Sonar projects when you upgrade?

Is it bound to cause problems, or?

I have some old S4 projects that seemed run fine at first, but as time went by all kinds of weird stuff with GUI started happening.

Track manager suddenly not opening dialog from Console Strips - whatever I did. In other projects it worked fine when switching, but back in same problem project stop working again.

I changed output of a midi track to another synth, and midi input port was reset to first. This happend over and over on this particular project.

When trying selecting an old, not used, muted midi track - weird things with Inspector view started happening. Not redrawing at all, partly redrawing and things like that. You could collapse and open Inspector, but what was on screen remained. I updated graphics drivers and rebooted - nothing improved. So I hid these two midi tracks that were creating strange behavior of everything else if they were visible - and gui start behaving normally again.

I have worked on these 3 years in Reaper and will eventually move that stuff creating fresh X3 projects, but just wondering about your experience on this matter. It does affect how you plan ahead - since I take my time reworking till I'm satisfied. It might continue until X5, one never knows.

Thanks.

I've never found them to be that problematic. While we were developing X3, I cleaned up my Cakewalk Projects folder with projects from SONAR 6 to X2. I didn't run into any major issues and I just re saved the project first before working with it.

Are you just opening them up and working on them or versioning them first? Sometimes it's best to get a new project file created.

    Best Regards,
    Seth

I have projects going back to Pro Audio (wrk files) and have never had a problem opening any of them.

Disclaimer, I do not have X3 yet.

    Thank you, Seth and John.
I'm good with this assurance it's usually no problem migrating doing upgrades.

Everything I did for a couple of days were no issues at all.
Haven't enjoyed working in a daw as much for quite some time.
No issues running project as such, sounding as expected etc.

I have worked some in S8.5 with these - but they originate from S4.0.
And there were a number of plugins in project no longer in system which I replaced.

Versioning, I'm not sure what is meant by that?
    Doing a SaveAs thingy?
Normal save, is that different - that it tries to maintain an old format, or something?

I was just eager to get going with the old stuff I had and explore X3.
I will create new fresh stuff from reworked in Reaper - no big deal.

Any problems that I have ever had opening projects created in earlier (or later) versions of Sonar have always been because of the plugins not being the same version, rather than due to Sonar.

I've tested and opened projects from Cakewalk 2000 (whatever version that was) and upwards with great success so far in X3a, Cakewalk has always been backwards compatible, still appears to be. Like Kev999 says, it's all about the plugins, you used to be using then.

Cakewalk by Bandlab, Cubase, RME Babyface Pro, Intel i7 3770K @3.5Ghz, Asus P8Z77-VPro/Thunderbolt, 32GB DDR3 RAM, GeForce GTX 660 Ti, 250 GB OS SSD, 2TB HDD samples, Win 10 Pro 64 bit, backed up by Macrium Reflect, Novation Impulse 61 Midi Key Controller, Tannoy Active Near Field Monitors, Guitars by Vantage, Gibson, Yamaki and Ovation.

I have tried opening a bun file from an old project created in Home Studio years ago and other than having to replace a bunch of plugins I don't have installed any more it was fine.
