what am i missing when trying to copy and paste an envelope to a new automation lane?

search is of no help right now ("please wait before searching again" conflict)

im following directions laid out by copy and paste special in the manual, but I cant duplicate an envelope onto a automation lane below it on the same track. Its just jumping the entire range on the new lane.

As far as i can remember in Sonar the parameter is fixed, meaning the automation is tied to its parameter, where as say for example in ableton the actual automation is not tied to its parameter so you can copy the automation to a separate parameter or on another VST parameter all together, I have found it varies from DAW to DAW, reason will copy some types but not all.
I could be wrong ?, but think that is the case with sonar !  you can only copy and paste etc. within that parameter, if it decides to work, can be very buggy.

in X2 (probably in other versions) you can more or less copy automation to a different parameter, though it takes some fiddling.  A basic problem, though, is that the scaling of different parameters is different - so that, for example, copying Volume automation to the input gain of a plugin will probably not result in the same volume changes, since the input gain of the plugin likely not only has different low and high points, but could have different rates of change over different regions to allow greater precision in some places.

to copy it, you have to right-click on the envelope you want to copy from, and assign it to the new parameter, then paste the original envelope back to the original parameter.  I'm not sure if you can paste into an existing parameter.

thanks brian. that solution worked.

why they chose not to just allow straight up copy and pasting is beyond me. the envelopes are simply dealing in percentages.
