no sound after notebook goes to sleep

Hi All,

I have a notebook with Scarlett 2i4 USB interface - after I wake notebook from sleep sonar x2a seems to get into all sorts of problems, (this also happens with my Samson g-track) usually I would see the track audio meter level indicators in sonar receiving sound from the instrument connected (guitar in this case) however I can't hear any sound out of headphones or monitors attached to the scarlett.  Anything recorded previous to sleep and even after sleep sometimes won't playback any sound too. I generally need to either restart sonar or reboot...

Is there anyway to workaround this issue without having to disable sleep, are there any sonar configuration setting to keep USB connected while in sleep, anything?

Windows 8 x64
sonar x2a studio x64 (configured to only use scarlett audio I/O devices)
HPENVY 17" notebook, 16gb ram, 2tb disk, i7 cpu blah blah blah,..

Thanks in advance
Jim

You should not be letting anything on your system go to sleep when working with audio. Not the hard drives, not the USB ports and certainly not the entire system. What is likely happening is the system is disconnecting the driver for the Scarlett when it goes into sleep mode. If you want your system to be able to sleep make sure you at least save and close the program before you walk away from the system for longer than you have the "go to sleep" setting set to.

Most people go well out of their way to make sure nothing falls asleep on their DAWs. It's just one of the realities of working with audio.

And one suggestion to resolve the issue if and when it does happen, and I have no idea if this will work, is to click the Stop Audio Engine button of the Sonar Control Bar. That might reset the driver and get things working again. It works for other stuff but I really am not certain if it will work for this. Still though having the system go to sleep with an open project seems like a recipe for project corruption.

I am not a computer tech though so maybe someone else has better advice.

oh ok thanks beepster - u gave me some ideas; so I changed the power settings in windows, I use the high performance power settings, clicked change power setting and click change advance power settings, navigate to usb settings, expand and disabled while plugged in option.

seems to do the trick..(EDIT (NOT)). now after wake from sleep, playback is fine.(NOT FINE)..

EDIT:  Hmmm - well I think I spoke to soon.  I went for lunch came back and woke it from sleep... Some dialog box message popped up saying audio had disconnected, click yes to re-route or no so that sonar remembers the settings (or something like that) I clicked No and tried playback and no sound... (I personally think this is a bug)

So I reset computer again, just to confirm - and same problem - what is really strange though is Sonar is configured to use USB Audio CODEC Mic in and USB Audio CODEC Speakers out on Samson G-Track, while the error/warning or Informational message refers to "Intel(R) Display Audio"!!!!, here is the exact wording on the popup that I see when I wake the computer...

    Intel(R) Display Audio
The above Audio/MIDI device was disconnected from your system.
Would you like SONAR to reroute these outputs to an available device?
Clicking 'no' allows SONAR to remember output settings to this device.
Note: If playback is in progress, clicking 'yes' will stop the transport.
    [YES] [NO]

I click No... then there is no sound playback anymore...

I press "P" and check the preferences and then see Output Drivers is changed to use "HP 2711 (Intel(R) Display Audio)", This btw is never selected as there is no sound card built into the monitor, (I also have HDMI Connected to this monitor and using it as extended display)  (grrrrrrraaaaawwwwwwwww!)

So why does this occur when really my output is always configured to use the Samson G-TRACK USB Headphone port (ie: USB Audio CODEC Speakers)??

I suspect a bug - what do you think?

EDIT: Ok went to the control panel Sound/Playback options, I can see in the list of playback sound cards the HP 2711 Intel Display Driver was available but not set as default - right clicked it and chose "Disable" - it is no longer in this list - will see now how it goes.

Setting Windows for sleep will always disconnect your Daw. Just set it not to go to sleep

It's most likely the USB port that's not reviving. You can exempt the USB ports in your power profile. That'll let your screen go dark and drives spin down without losing audio.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Yeah I already did that - but for some reason this HP 2711 display I have appears as a sound card - and for some unknown reason when wakes from sleep this driver is selected in sonar as output - friggennnnn, why?  anyway - as mentioned I went to the control panel sound playback options and saw this in the list and right clicked and disabled it.  Hopefully this now resolves the problem and my comp can go to sleep and not be affected by this anymore...

    Will post an update.
