Location of VST presets

Hi all,

Where does Sonar keep any *fxp and *vstpreset files by default? Is there any option to change the default path so the drop-down preset menu from a plugin window shows the presets in this folder?

Thanks!

this is pretty plugin-independent as far as i can tell.  just as a heads up cakewalk decided to use the extension .fxpreset for vst3 presets instead of steinberg's standard .vstpreset - so, in the plugin wrapper, when you select load preset you can't select anything with the .vstpreset extension.  the only way around this is if the plugin itself has a browser built in that lets you choose the .vstpreset file, which would be compatible with the files saved when creating presets in cubase, etc.

if your on about cake's own synths some of their browsers are custom and don't have that = not so great for integrating into kore.

@fog - but you can save any of cakewalk's synth programs as vst presets, for whatever reason in some places it is more useful.  in the synth window, click the arrow next to "VST" and click save preset.  load preset will load the fxp just fine.

    Thanks for the responses, guys.

There does seem to be an issue with Steinberg VST3 plugins such as Retrologue and Padshop. These synths rely on the DAW's preset browser for managing and loading presets. The problems is, as was mentioned above, the Steinberg standard is to use the .vstpreset suffix for presets whereas Cakewalk have chosen to use the .fxpreset suffix instead. This means that I cannot see or load any presets for these synths.

do they work if you change the file extension via explorer? seems a bizarre decision, maybe a baker could elaborate?

Sorry about that. I think it was an oversight/typo to call it .vstpreset. It should have been .vstpreset for vst3 and .fxp for VST2 (which is correct)
I'll change it in the next update.

Would it be possible to drag & drop .vstpreset files from the browser directly onto a VST3 plugin? Would that work?

No but it would be a nice enhancement :)

To expand on the topic, it would be wonderful if we could use the browser for preset searching and general management with advanced search functions.

just an fyi in padshop you can load vst3 presets from the ui.  click the ↑↓ icon in the synth and select import preset.  navigate to the C:\ProgramData\VST3 Presets\Steinberg Media Technologies\Padshop directory and a sub-directory and select a preset.  unfortunately, retrologue has no facility for opening presets.

I'm looking for the location of Dimension Pro presets specifically.  Although I am seeing these when I plug Dimension Pro to a new project, I cannot find the actual file (other than the project *.cwp) where the Dimension Pro Preset is stored.  I am hoping to be able to migrate these presets from my old system.  Amy assistance would be appreciated

I have seen others refer to DP programs as presets. To avoid confusion here is an image showing the different areas on the DP UI

The presets in the red box are stored in the registry. There are export and import functions in the Cakewalk Plug-in Manager for these presets. The green box contains the menu for the VST preset manager. These are stored in files on the HD at a location of your choosing. The purple box contains the DP Program Browsers, the contents displayed in this box is in the path provided in my previous post.

    Scook,

I'm a longtime Sonar user and well aware of the differences between a program and a preset.  Yes, I was reminded by a kb article that these are kept in the registry.  My old PC failed abruptly and I neglected to back up the presets from the Plug-In Manager.  The old system drive and registry files are accessible however.

As I see it, my options are:
    A) Try to bring up Win 10 on the old system, launch Sonar and export presets.
    B) Try to get the registry information exported from the old system hard drive.

I'm guessing that I would need some kind of utility that can read the registry hive / files from a system drive without actually bringing the OS up.  Not sure if that even exists.  Then I could export the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cakewalk Music..." branch to a .reg file and import it into the new system.  of course, I would probably have to be more selective about exporting an importing, limiting this to the plug-in manager data.

    What are your thoughts?

If you can get the old drive attached to the new machine or a copy of the old ntuser.dat somewhere on the new PC,  regedit may do what you want. I found quite a few posts using Google about reading registry files from non-system disks.

I'm always reluctant to update registry files, but it's starting to look like that's the only option.  Old system will not boot from the old system drive.  I can put the old drive in a USB dock, and try that approach.

    Which NTUSER.DAT would you look in?  C:\users\<My Login User>, C:\users\<All Users>...?
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cakewalk Music is stored in NTUSER.DAT, right?

A lot of the registry is in C:\Windows\system32\config...

Many Windows registry hooks in Sonar, thinking that may have made cross-platform (MacOS) more difficult.

Just guessing I do not use Cakewalk Presets other than the ones installed with the DX plug-ins. That said, it appears the presets are stored by user so I would expect to see them in the login users files. Would it be in HKEY_CURRENT_USER? I would have guessed HKEY_USERS because that is the real user data. I make no claim to being a Windows authority.
