The Bouy: I wish I was your Mother (cover)

Just another experimental cover to attempt to use my 'Corncrake' voice again.

Taken from the Mott the Hoople album from the early '70's album 'Mott'.

Not familiar with the original, Mott the Hoople were not high on my listening list back in the day.

At least your vocal does not kill at a parsec.

The backing track sounds very accomplished, for me the vox sounds in a slightly different space.

Nice enough though Jon and good to hear you producing music thanks for sharing

I like it.  The mix is good with the bass and drums very clear and your voice right on top surrounded by the other instruments.
One idea - have yo tried lifting the key of the song up a half step or eve a whole step?  That might give the overall vocal a lift.  I think  you have the range to do that.
Many times before committing to building a track, I will play with the key to see what is the best one for me.  Just a thought.

That's pretty good! Good choice for a cover, there was a lot more to 'M the H' than people gave them credit for. Everything sounds nice in the mix to me. The rhythm guitar is perhaps a little fussy, I might just do a simple pick/strum on the intro and a lazy strum when the band kicks in, just to make it swing a little better.

I never really listened to them much either.  I don't know why.  Just wasn't on the radio much?  Wow, Jon, you really got low on some of those notes.  The more you sing the better you get.  Hmmmmm, funny how that works.  Overall it is a really good job.  The mix seems really good.  I like the way the bass and drums are so present.  Great tone on the bass.

I like the gravelly vocals, and the backing tracks (including the instrumentation) are very smooth and don't get in the way.  If you didn't mention it was Mott the Hoople I would have guessed it was a Dylan cover.  It definitely has a bit of that kind of a vibe to it.

I never even heard of them, but that is nothing new for me. But, this is pretty good and a bit different for my listening pleasures, but sounds like you did a good job on the instrumentation, backing tracks, vocals and mix. That is one deep vocal you have going there and has a country music sound to your lungs. The song does have a Dylanish sound to it... kinda!!

Gosh am I the only one who ever listened to M the H.  The production, playing, and mix are all great.  The vocal --- well, I think that it is perfect for this arrangement and for the lyrics.  It does have a gravelly Dylan meets Lou Reed type of quality that I think fits.  To me vocalization in not just hitting the notes but is as much about style as well.  Most of the singers that I am thinking about are old school and probably wouldn't be considered technically perfect performers but they sure could sell a song.
I think everything works great in this number.

John:  Yay, I sang a song and the Wookiee's fur didn't all fall out!   Thanks for the comments.

Jim: Thanks, yes I bore your comments in mind re bass and drum levels from you comments on an earlier song where you mentioned they might be a little low.  I did try the song in B and Bb but it didn't sound right so I stayed in A I seem to be an octave or two below most people though.

James: Yes I think I agree with you with the acoustic parts, I did have them under control with some volume envelopes to keep them lower in the quiet parts but I noticed I had the automation lanes for them muted after I'd bounced it all down.  Yet another senior moment.

    Good to see you around.

Yeah, Lou Reed! I like the song and the production...I'm not in my studios, so through these cheap PC speakers it sounds good.

Well done! The acoustic strumming sounds very smooth, which is a hard thing to do. Great mix and recording overall. Have to admit though, I've never heard this song either.

I like the overall groove that you have gelling together. Each instrument seems vital to making it all happen. Really nice.

I especially enjoyed what seemed like a light dose of backing vocals in the chorus. That seemed just right too.

I may start calling you Mr. Golden Ears or something like that...  If I can afford the fee to do so.

Nice JB. I think this is the first I have ever listened to any of your music. The acoustic guitars were well mixed and add a lot of dimension to the whole thing. I think your vocals go well with this and sound good.

Dan: Some very nice comments there, appreciated.  I'm kind of glad to do a cover of a song I've liked and no-one has heard it before so that's cool.
