Melodyne Confusion

I haven't had a chance to use Melodyne and never used V-Vocal. I was checking out the new X3 docs and find that V-Vocal is very well documented but Melodyne docs are sparse. I've read a couple posts regarding updating Melodyne essential to the full package but I have no idea If I need/want to.
 
Can somebody please clue me in?
