A quick little blues jam using X3b

https://soundcloud.com/clintmartin/x3b-blues-jam

I used console emulators and tape sims on every track and master bus. The third party vsts were, Klanghelm DC8C2, SDRR, and Valhallaroom (my new plugins) on Drum bus and master bus. I used Melodyne on the bass, but it still sucks. The Concrete Limiter was used on bass, drums and the master bus with a little extra push from LimiterNo.6. It's sloppy for sure, but it has a nice old analog sound I think. The drums are Session drummer Neil Peart "the Kit". They sound kind of tiny, but real. I used the Nomad stereo widening plugin on the drums.

Nice guitar playing and sound on this. Not crazy about the drums, but they will do for now. Bass sounds alright. Nice blues sound. Get 'er done and we'll see what the finished product sounds like. Could always throw in a little harmonica on this one as well.

I agree with John.  Drums sound a bit "tinny", but the bass and guitar are great.

Yeah, I'm not thrilled with the drums, but Session drummer is limited with what it can do. This was mainly a little test of the tape sim and not really a keeper or anything. Thanks for listening! I appreciate and agree with the comments.

Can you possibly adjust the individual drum sounds?  If so, I'd suggest maybe:
    1. Boost the high freqs and overall volume on the hi-hat and cymbals.
    2. add some bottom end to the kick and snare.

I think a total redo would be in order if I wanted to keep any of this. I may write some lyrics and make it a proper song, but I may not. I used the S-type console and the tape sim (it may have hurt the cymbals) on the drums to take away a bit of the brightness and used the N-type on the guitars. I believe the A-type was on the master bus. I also went back and forth on the tape speeds to adjust the brightness on different tracks. All in all a good learning experience.

Wow, the guitar sound was crazy good, and you play really well!
I won't comment on the drums as you already have, but I'd be interested to hear how this develops.

Thanks for the listen. The snare sounds awful or it would be salvageable. I was mainly trying to show how the tape sim sounds and just kind of played a simple little thing. I believe much like the console emulations the effect of the tape sim is accumulative. They are very subtle on there own. The noise knob was turned down all the way.

Guitar is cool, the drums well....

Did you try running the drum parts out to different tracks and using some other toys to tailor the sound some?

Clint, I like the tune a lot.  I'm curious as to why you use would Melodyne on the bass.  Bass sounds good but seems a bit choppy or staccato.  What are you using for bass? If it's a synth would you like to have a live bass track some time?  Your music is good, Clint.  Keep 'em coming.

I used a bass for bass! I used melodyne because this was a quick one take kind of deal and it wasn't played very well Hahaha! I didn't do a lot of work with melodyne...maybe 10 minutes.
You can play bass on anything you find interesting...It would be fun. I'm going to redo this song from scratch I think, add some vocal and maybe...a beginning and an end! When I get it close enough to play along to I'll send it your way if you want. It would give me a reason to try the gobbler thing...I haven't registered for that yet.

@Wookie...I didn't separate the tracks like I should have. I didn't add anything to the basic session drummer midi at all. It was only going to be a click track to play along with and try the new toys in X3. In hindsight I should have done a lot different, but it shows the Tape sims off for those who may be interested in them. I also have Klanghelm SDRR on the bus in desk mode, but it's not being pushed to hard. I do have Valhallaroom on the drums as it was new to me as well. I bought 3 new plugins along with X3...so I was using them all and trying to learn the ins and outs of each plugin. By accident I ended up liking this for the old sound I think it has. Sounds like a live band screwing around at practice or something.

Hi Clint.  Good stuff on this one.  This is a nice song and your guitar playing is excellent.  I understand what people are saying about the drums but I am a bit of an odd duck.  I'm always looking for a retro-live performance Blues sound.  I guess it reminds me of the quality of the 78's, 45's, and 33's that I listened to as a kid.  Your production is great but that tinny sound of the drums -- to me --- gives it that kind of live performance feel.  Now a good vocal that overdrives the mike would give it a good retro feel.
Great number -- keep them coming.

As said. A kicking guitar and a nice warm groove but a really odd snare tone. lol
Very dry rattle and separated from the rest.
    Again, excellent licks.

    Clint,

every hear Ray Wylie Hubbard's snare?  Very trashy.  Works for him.  Good song for testing.  I like the way it holds together and is a bit rounded w/ the tape sim.  Need to play w/ it.

    Hey, Clint,

Really nice work on this quick and dirty classic blues jam!

Great guitar playing, nice crunchy tone and classic sounding solos with a perfect vintage blues vibe.

Good stuff, buddy, have a great weekend!

I've heard of the name, but no I'm not really familiar with him. This was just a quick test with a simple blues progression. I didn't tweak the drums at all (except for detuning the snare). I inserted SD3 and loaded Neil Pearts kit, DC8C2, Valhallaroom and that was it for the drums.
@Bob...I've been experimenting with the Tape sim and console emulations. It seems to really help with the guitars, if you use an amp sim and want an older tape/analog type sound. Thanks for listening...the testing will continue.
