[SOLVED...I hope]My First Crash! Happened Again (Sonar X3b)
I've been using Sonar X3 4-5 hrs a day since I downloaded it 9 days ago. Yesterday I had my first crash just doing a simple task of moving a note in PRV. I've had X2 freeze on my old computer before but it was when I pushed it to the limit using 2 or 3 sample modeling synth without freezing them. I was surprised that just moving a note caused a crash. The program asked if I wanted to send a report to Cakewalk which I did. Maybe the program needed a rest...  Walt

Having been a software developer for over 30 years when weird things like this happen it usually is not the thing you were doing that caused the failure but the entire sequence of events up to that point.
I cannot tell you how many times I've found the root of problem to be the 1st, 2nd or 3rd prior event that actually manifested itself in the final event.
Can you try and recall the events leading up to the moving of a note? And then try and reproduce the crash?

Thanks for the response. I was recording some MIDI stuff from my synth as usual and did some rearranging of notes that my tired old hands didn't quite get right. Nothing unusual. Same stuff I've been doing since I got the program. Could be related to Clarks Third Law.."Anything that cannot be explained by modern technology or science is magic". Otherwise the program has been flawless. Be interesting to see if Cakewalk comes up with anything. Walt.

Well it happened again. Opened up the same file I was working on last night. As soon as I switched to the notation page, it turned white and asked if I wanted to send in a report. The file is very simple. One audio track and two MIDI tracks, with one muted. Corrupted file? Other programs seem to be okay. I'll play around with the others a bit more to see if it is just this simple file.

What Softsynth are you driving with the MIDI?
No Softsynths. The MIDI channel is driving a Roland Integra 7 Rackmount. I've done this with 16 channels on other songs with no problems. Walt

You would suspect that except the first time it crashed that MIDI channel had not been saved, so I had to enter it again. It's a short MIDI file since I played the lead from memory (what's left) but wanted to convert the MIDI file to sheet music via Notion. I don't have a concrete head like other gifted people and rely on sheet music. Now that I have the sheet music, I don't need this file anymore (I've saved the backing track), so it might remain a mystery unless Cakewalk finds something. (They have two reports). Walt

One way to go is create a new empty project and copy and paste the tracks from the old one to the new. See if that works.

I had pretty much the exact same thing happen to me. I was editing a bass line that I did with Native Instruments Rickenbacker bass running on Kontakt 5. I had been editing in the PRV for about 20 minutes, and then I went to move a single note, clicked on it, and it crashed to the desktop. This was my first X3b crash, and I've had no crashes since. However, I was not asked if I'd like to report it to Cakewalk. It's ok though. Other than this one incident, X3 has been really solid for me. And I'm loving the new comping features. They are a real time saver.

I've been trying for about an hour to make it happen again and couldn't. Since I've not had any other issues for 9 days using the same program, different scores, Dan at Cakewalk couldn't duplicate (thank you Dan for trying!) and now I can't, I'll just chalk it up to magic... This took me a couple of days to figure out and I thought it was other things contributing to the crash. But when I figured it out, I stopped using the 16th channel and everything works flawlessly. I have no idea why this is. Try it without using the 16th and tell us what happens. Worth a try.

What I don't understand is that I've been using the same setup (song files/hardware) with X2 for months with no problems. 10 days ago I installed X3 and it worked fine until Sunday when X3 became unreliable. Last night it happened again. I started up the computer to play a couple backing tracks (one was the 20 piece big band sound) and everything was okay until I shut down X3. Gave me the tranparent white screen. (I only used Sonar to play back the songs, no editing) Dan G. has all the Cakewalk Problem Repots. I'm suspecting installing X3b patch might have caused the problem. I'll try uninstalling X3A/B and reinstalling just X3A. I'll first wait until I get a response from Cakewalk. I've modified my Signature to add a couple hardware devices I had left out. Walt

Thanks. It's an ASUS P9X79. I've used system restore to go back to 10/4/13. I installed the X3b patch on 10/5/13 at night. 10/6/13 is when everything started turning to doo-doo. Hmmm, correlation? I'll be using the program most of the day and see how it performs. Walt Ya gotta love this forum. Everyone's very helpful. Hope I get the opportunity to pay back!

Well that did the trick. I used "System Restore" to bring back my music room computer back to a day before I installed the X3b patch. I've used X3a now for a couple days with no issues.
I suspect that the installation of "b" didn't go well for whatever reason. I will stick with "a" for awhile and then re-download the "b" patch and see what happens. As they say "all's well that ends..."
