Severe Pops/Stutters All of A Sudden

Hello all,

I've been using Sonar X3 fine for the past week but I've loaded a project this evening and I'm getting constant pops/stutters during playback/recording and when sending midi to a VSTi. No settings have been changed and nothing has been added to projects.
This is happening with all projects I open.
I've changed my audio interface settings from WDM to ASIO (and back again). Changed the latency slider from one end to the other restarted Windows/Sonar.

The only thing I did was back up my projects (using an external HDD) when I turned my computer on, simply copying my projects over to a USB3 external HDD.

I'm *hoping* there's a simple fix to this issue

Thanks

if you're now loading the troublesome project from that hdd then that's probably your culprit

Hello,
All projects are troublesome. - I plugged my USB3 HDD into my computer, copied my projects, and removed the HDD. - I'm not loading the projects from the external drive.

Was the backup in progress while you were having this problem?

I was opened up an old project (probably from Sonar 8.5 or X1 and it was taking forever to load, when I noticed my weekly backup was running!

If no settings/hardware/software changes were made it sounds like something might be running in the background.

Are you using a laptop? Your external HDD is powered by the USB? That might be a drain, see if there is an ac adapter that can power it.

I was using a laptop ages ago with my M-Audio Fastrack Pro powered through the usb. Real trouble, as soon as I got some dedicated power for the Fastrack it was working fine.

What are your current reported latencies in Sonar?

What sample rate are you using in Sonar and your interface?

If using ASIO, what is your ASIO Buffer Size?

Are you possibly plugged into a USB 3 port with your interface?

Have you checked your system for latency issues with either DPC Latency Checker or LatencyMon?

Thank you!! This seems to have worked?!? Whilst I recover from my heart attack, does anyone know why this may have happened and how I can avoid it happening in the future?
Backing up files and folders is not supposed to induce a fear of losing years of hard work.

Also, do the pops go away when you temporarily bypass all effects?  'E' on your computer keyboard toggles off/on bypass all effects.

Hi Bob. The issue seems to be related to backing up my projects. Once I re-plugged in the external drive I copied the projects to the issue is no longer present.

I suspect that the software you used to backup your files left a resident process running in the background.  Once you unplugged the HDD from the system the program continued to run drawing on the CPU.  I used to have a similar issue when my DAW remained either connected to the NET, I was running Anti-Virus software, or I left the power management in Windows enabled.
