I have a site pass at Groove3, I think there's something for almost everyone in these particular videos.  If you're just starting out you'd getting something out of these for some time to come IMO.

Yes the X2 video is excellent. If you are going to upgrade to X3 in the near future I would probably recommend that one...it still covers a lot of the basic stuff and is quite applicable to X2 as well as X3.

I have X2 and X3 videos.  They cover much the same ground but are excellent.

Highly recommended for a new user or an experienced one.

Will this set of tutorials take the place of Scott's book on Sonar X2 or actually dovetail with it?

    Buy both. They're worth it.

I consider Scott's excellent book more of a reference. The videos are a hands on 'look and see' type deal. As mentioned the dovetail nicely. If moneys tight I think I would go with Scott but both products are worth it.

I'd say Scott's Sonar Power books are more useful in the long term but the Eli Kransberg vids are extremely well done and will get you up and running extremely quickly. The best bang for the buck is to probably pay for a month pass at G3, watch those vids and work through all the lessons while taking notes. This will probably take a few days to really nail. Then you'll have the rest of the month to explore all the other vids. There are some very good ones about mixing with X1 that are still very relevant to how things work in X2.

    Cheers.

    Hi Micky,

Thanks for your interest in the videos, and to everyone else for the kind support. You can view a summary of each of the videos contained in the series here:

That should give you a good idea of if it is what you are looking for or not.

    Thanks.

I think the best thing about the Groove3 Sonar course is that it gets you up to speed on the basics of using the program, and puts you in a position to be able to tackle the manual should you need to get right into the nitty gritty of the small technical details. Diving into the manual without any prior knowledge is just going to confuse and frustrate a beginner. I think the best way to learn Sonar is through a combination of Eli and FBB's videos, and working your way through Scott's book as well (just when is X3 Power! out anyway?)

I also have an All-Access pass and I agree with Beepster and some of the others.  The Groove3 vids should get you up and running in X2 in just a few hours, while Scott's books are better references, and, of course, the 20-lb owners manual when all else fails.  Eli is the man when it comes to tutorials.  He's clear and concise without being verbose and he maintains a good balance of lecturing, providing visual demonstrations, and providing audio examples.  This is an area where many tutorials fail IME - they tend to do way too much talking, or have cringe-worthy examples that make it unbearable to listen to, etc. (see youtube for some of the worst of the worst).  Most of the Groove3 narrators do a great job, but Eli is exceptional IMO and he's pretty much the standard by which I judge all other tutorial narrators.

Also, the last couple of years around Black Friday they have a sale on the all-access pass for $99/yr which ends up a little over $8/mo.
Worth it if there's a lot of vids your interested in.

    Thanks for the support Sharke.

FYI MickyD, the original nine hour "SWA Complete Sonar X2" video is just that "complete" and covers just about every aspect of it in great detail, the latest SWA X3 video is focused purely on the changes and new features.

Off topic but just a comment about Groove 3 in general. I purchased the Full Pass (whatever it's called) for IIRC $99.00 but even at twice that it is a truly great deal. Many of the videos about producing are in genres which I would not have thought to be useful to me but they have consistently proven enlightening.

It is also a good way to see what the competition is providing...which helps me create good Feature Requests to Cakewalk.

I have the one year pass for $99.00 as well, but I just noticed you can go one month at a time for $15 if you only want to see a few product videos.

And as Eli has stated you can preview a few sections to see if it'll be what you like, before you pay anything. You'll know by then.

Also, looks like X3 is now up & available there for those who have upgraded.
