Printing Problem with X1
I'm brand new to Sonar, and the copy I'm using is X1, which has been working well, so far. But I've run into a problem trying to print a file. Specifically, I'm working with Tutorial 5 -- Working with music notation. At the bottom of the tutorial there's a link which takes me to "Printing your notation." I'm fine until I get to number 3, which says to click "Print Preview." But I can't because Print Preview is grayed out. So is Print, by the way. The only Print related command that isn't grayed out is Print Setup, which allows basic setup of the printer, but when I click on OK within Print Setup, the printer doesn't do anything. All Print Setup does is set up the printer. Finally, at the last of this "Printing your notation" window there's this tip: Tip: To change the title, composer and copyright information, select Project > Info to open the File Info window. OK, so I go and do that. Hey, nothing to lose and I hadn't done it yet anyway, so I go there -- only to find that it's copied the pertinent information in from the file I want to print. But now this window, or whatever, is occupying my entire screen and there's no obvious way to get rid of it. No "OK" or "cancel" buttons anywhere, no way to shrink it. Finally I drag about 90% of it off my desktop into that mysterious land of "off the screen." This brings back X1 and my project. So I check the print options again, and this time all three of them are active. So I go to Print Preview, like I was supposed to do in the first place, only to find that the screen I had just gotten rid of is the only image showing. After futzing around with that stupid screen for a while longer I discover it has the all-important X in the top right corner, so I dismiss it. But wouldn't you know it? I'm back to only having "Printer Setup" as my only available printer command. OK, I give up. It shouldn't be this difficult, especially since the program is clearly not following the dingbusted help routine that came with it! So what's the secret? How does one print out ones sheet music from X1? Hey, if it's not possible, tell me so. I'll save it to midi and export it. I have two or three other programs laying around that I can use for printing sheet music and they all do a fine job. But that really isn't the point, is it? Since X1 says it can be done, I want to know how to do it in X1. Oh, and an off topic question: I looked around here for the equivalent of a suggestion box, couldn't find anything. Does something like that exist here, or do I just have to email Cakewalk and hope they pay attention?

If Print Preview is greyed out... You need to select a track or tracks first. The design is to allow you to pick what tracks to print.

Hi Greg, yes I'm aware of that link. However having a public suggestion box on a set of forums invites comments, I think, and is a way for users to discuss and brainstorm what they would like to see offered in future versions. Rob, thanks for the tip, but it didn't do any good. The file has seven midi tracks and I've highlighted all of them, the clicked on Views/Staff so I would get a view of all seven parts -- this is what I want to print out, in musical notation. But whether the tracks are highlighted or not, Print and Print Preview remain grayed out.

OK, I think I know what's happening (I opened up my copy of X1 just to be sure). The Print & Print Preview that you are referring to is on the main menu of SONAR. About the only things you *can* print from there are the "info" window and a couple other text based windows. What you want is the Print menu on the toolbar at the top the staff view window. "This" print & print preview will only handle the staff view you have visible in the staff view window. (And I know that it's confusing, you aren't the first person to have difficulty with this.)

Is your copy of X1 showing a print menu atop the Staff window? Because mine isn't. Not atop the tracks window either. I changed from Staff to Console view, and still I don't get a set of Print commands up there. So as near as I can tell with my copy, the only place where I can find print commands is under File/Print . . . I appreciate you assistance in this matter. Got any other ideas?

There are 5 versions of SONAR X1: LE, Essential, Studio, Producer and Producer Expanded. I can only address two of them for sure. There is a print function in the staff view menus of Producer and Producer Expanded.

Thanks for your reply, Scook. Took a look at "about Sonar" in the Help dropdown, and I have X1 Producer, build number 184. Atop my Staff window are the commands "Edit View Tracks." I note that as I toggle other views in that location, such as the console or piano roll, various different commands appear, but in none of the instances is there a Print command. In fact within every command's set of options or choices, none have a Print offering. So with my copy of X1 Producer, it appears one cannot issue commands to a printer from any of those windows. Referring back to the installed Help, it mentions that the staff view cannot be printed if the Staff view is "float enabled." I'm assuming that just means when it is undocked. Anyway, mine is and has always been docked.

There were print issues with old versions of X1. You may want to apply X1c and X1d updates. The updates are available on the X1 support page.
