Can't get the GR-55 to work as a midi controller in X3

Being a guitar player I can say that midi is not my strong area of expertise. I think there is something I am missing. I cannot get my Roland GR-55 To function as a midi controller. Here is what I ruled out.

1. The current drivers are downloaded and installed.
2. The GR-55 does communicate with the computer because other apps outside of X3 work fine. Tested the floorboard app.
3. The drivers show up in cakewalk and I can select them.
4. Under MIDI/ Devices in preferences the GR-55 is selected. nothing else is selected
5. Under MIDI/ Instruments The GR-55 is selected as the default MIDI controller
6. Under MIDI/ Control surfaces in preferences the Act Midi controller is the GR-55 and the in port and out port both have the GR-55 selected.

The GR-55 is plugged in via USB but I can't use it to control any instruments. What am I doing wrong?

I know it is not a driver issue, computer issue, or anything outside of Sonar. Is this set up right?
