X3 Plug-In Manager Missing Plug-ins

In the plug-in manager, I created a layout of my own that worked great in X2.  Now when I try to use it in X3, a lot of the plug-ins and sub-folders are missing if I try to insert the plug-in by right clicking on the FX box.  However, if I use the plug-in browser that's normally docked on the right side of the screen I can see all my plug-ins.  Any ideas on how to fix this?

X3 has also crashed 2 or 3 times in the past 5 minutes just from me inserting plug-ins on a track.  I thought the X3b upgrade would fix a lot of that but it seems like X3 is still pretty unstable on my machine.

Are the same layouts working in X2 currently? Do you still have the same plugins installed? Do you have waves plugins in your layouts?
Its very hard to understand the issue and what you are doing without detailed information. Ideally you should contact technical support and they can collect all the details.

Plugins from layouts are only displayed if they are available and scanned on your system. Also if there are VST3 equivalents available, by default X3 will hide VST2 versions.

I suggest posting screenshots and making your layouts files available for someone to look at.

Thanks for the response Noel.  To answer your questions:

    1) Yes, the same layouts are working in X2 currently.
    2) Yes, I have all of the same plugins installed.  I was using X2 last night with the same plugins without any issues.
    3) Yes, I have the waves plugins in my layouts.  It's not even that certain plugins are missing, whole subfolders are missing.  For example, I have a folder called "Delay" for my delay plugins.  Underneath that folder, I have two more folders called "Mono" and "Stereo" for different plugin versions.  When I right click to add an FX, I only see the "Mono" folder.  However, if I use the plugin browser I can see all folders.  Here's a screenshot: ttp://tinypic.com/r/21dqv52/5

There are VST3 versions available for my plugins so that may be the issue but I didn't want to take the time just yet to update my layout for VST3 versions since I have so many plugins and I have to get this project done soon.  Using the browser as a work around has been fine so I'll contact tech support when I get a chance.  Thanks for the quick response!

    hi

I had a similar situation that I used the plugin layout from X2 which includes WAVES plugs (pointing to the VST2 versions as there was no VST3 in X2a).

So now X3 hides VST2 plugins if VST3 Versions are found (default settings in preferences/VST) and the results (which was not intuitive to me) was that the WAVES VST2 from my custom layout did not show up and I thought there's problem with the dongle ... so I checked in X2a ... WAVES are there ... plugin scan again in X3b ... still no WAVES ... until I figured it's due to the new default options for VSts ... so I just disabled these default settings ... and my WAVES plugs were back ... BUT (!!!) this got me into bigger issues as I now was mixing VST3 (which were auto-upgraded by X3b @ project open) and VST2 which I was inserting from the custom layout - and WAVES plugs did not function properly anymore (GUI problems, etc) ...

So at teh end of the day I updated my extensive custom-layout for plugs so that it only uses VST3 and it's all working a lot better already ...

The sooner you do this, the fewer problems you will enounter

OK this is excellent information. Swidmark can you check if your Stereo folder contains only Waves plugins?
Also can you please share your plugin layout .pgl file so I can look at it.

As a test try turning off "Hide VST2 plugins ..." in the VST preferences and see if the layout now shows the hidden plugins.
They are hidden for a reason - to protect you :)  See this KB article which explains the reason for this.

That said, this case is making me wonder if I should auto upgrade the plugin clsid's in the old layout files to the VST3 equivalents as well when we load them. If we did this then the old X2 layouts would continue to work in X3. I'll look into it.
Its unfortunate that there is this incompatibility with Waves VST2 and VST3 but this issue is out of our control.

OK I just did that. Layouts will now respect the preferences and will automatically upgrade VST2's to VST3 without requiring you to edit your old layouts.
They will also consistently follow the hide vst2 settings both in the browser as well as the effects bin menu.
Thanks for the lead on this issue.

    Noel,

Yes, the Stereo folder contains only Waves plugins.  I'm not quite sure how to upload the .pgl file to this forum.

For your test, I tried deselecting the "Hide VST2 plugins..." option and I can now see all plugins and subfolders as I would expect.

Thanks for all the help, I really appreciate it!

Impressive how user feedback leads to improvements!

Thanks, Noel. Looking forward to X3c (although I don't have any complaints about X3b anymore - all is running fine now with the plugins sorted out!)
