Difference between X3 and X2 - Workflow worse IMO - or can someone help?

Hi everyone,

after having upgraded to X3 a few days ago I found out that there is a slight but noticeable difference in the interface. Please watch the screenshots and compare:
When I click on a track in Sonar X2 it gets highlighted by a different color in the track view and in the mixer window. Sonar X3 does not do that - it only changes color in the track name window. That is really annoying, because it makes me harder to find the selected track when I have many. And it makes it even harder to find the track in the mixer - especially when I want to edit FX and I scrolled up...

I am not sure if I described the problem clear enough, I hope you get the point. Can anybody help with this? My workflow really sucks in X3 because of that issue :(

PS: One other Thing: when I record MIDI over a midi Track where there already is one Clip, the notes of the old Clip will disappear? Looks like that - it didn't in X2. Kinda confused with new Version....  =/

PS: I don't mean selecting a "Clip" but selecting the whole track.

I find the new name highlight easier to spot than the insufficiently contrasty background change of X1 and 2. I see the issue with the Console, but in the specific case you cited, I would not scroll the Console, but just hit Shift+M to maximize the dock to get access to FX bins and other offscreen widgets. Seems to me that slight workflow changes should allow you to keep the track name visible. That said, I woudn't be averse to having the option to use the old track/bus highlighting, especially in the Console where the track name field is small and on the periphery of the view. But I think it went way in connection with implementing custom track header colors, and isn't likely to come back anytime soon..

As for new clips covering up earlier ones (assuming that's what you mean by "disappear") when lanes are not showing, I don't think that's changed from X2...? Can you give specific recording scenario and/or screenshot from X2 showing what you mean? Certainly many things have changed with clip and lane display in X3, so some adaptation is necessary for all of us.

X3 does do that. The hi light is the track name background. In the second picture you have the mixer viewing the top part.

That is exactly what I am talking about. In X2 i didnt need to scroll down the viewing, it was easier to find the right track in the mixer. Now I have to scroll down, to find the highlighted name.

Is there a way for me as a user to change it or do I have to deal with that feature and adapt myself to it?

I will try to bring screenshots to precise that.

Ok, done. Maybe I haven't worked enough to solve that, but from the first time I worked with new Version I really got embarassed about the significant change. :(
Though, I am willing to learn :)

Problems are:

#1. The Track I want to record is muted during recording. I cannot hear the previous recording, though I need that kind of "overdubbing" or how would you call it.
In X2 the existing midi notes and my playing are played back both. In X3 I cannot hear the existing notes but only my realtime playing. Maybe there is an option I haven't seen, yet?

#2. After having recorded the new clip notes I want to combine both clips.
In X2 I just have to mark them and combine them with right click.
In X3 the notes of the old clip are greyed out at the place where new clip is. When I combine the two clips, old notes will be erased. If I drag the new clip on another track, the old one will be cut at that position. So I cannot combine them easily. At the moment I just found a way by making more steps than before.

Hello Raule,
Did you mean regarding a Midi track that was originally recorded, say track 1 and then you wanted to record on top of that?
You could go up to the top Record Button and Right Click, and you'll see a box open with three options. Pick "Sound on Sound"
I like that option a lot if I had to fix a spot that I didn't want to "Auto Punch-In" or for a multi-efx, I find it a smoother flow.

Good luck!

Hello Trasky,

that is exactly what I meant. Thank you very much!

That was the option I was looking for. :)
Though in my version (german) it says "Overdub" indeed. Thx alot!

I haven't upgraded yet but have been researching the new release.  Read here about the new comping feature.  It looks like what you may be experiencing is the new *default* comping mode (though this article describes how it works with audio, not MIDI).

Yes, you can choose between three modes. "Comping" "Overwrite" and "Overdub". Good feature - once you know that you can switch and how to do it. I did not recognize it myself. Thx again for the advice.
