IIRC the change for the smart tool was from X1 to X2. AFAIK apart from take lane use the smart tool hasn't changed in X3 from X2. Try right click and drag to lasso select, or single left click for individual selection. The scroll lock while editing is an option you can turn on or off. TV---->Options--->Click Behaviour--->Left click locks scroll. It's to stop the notes or clips you are editing disappearing when editing. To restart scrolling right click in the top half of the time line. Personally I find it great once you get used to it. HTH

It needed to be smarterer. Seriously though, when the ST isn't fitting in with my workflow I use the Toggle Tool key binding to bounce back and forth between a static tool and the ST or two static tools. Usually the ST plus a traditional combo is enough. I specifically have to do this when inputting data to the PRV because double clicking all the time just to drop a note is dumb and leads to inaccuracies.

Set Mouse button = double click.

The smart tool took a post graduates course. And now its really smart. See I didn't go to post grad school and thus my spelling is awful. Edited for really bad spelling!

I am still considering doing that for one of my extra buttons but they may be better used mapped to other functions. The toggle is pretty simple as I generally have my left hand over the QWERTY keyboard anyway. I think it's kind of cool zipping around with the trackball and pecking away at the keyboard. Like driving stickshift... kind of... even though I've never driven stick... but that's what it would be like... yup. Stickshift. ;-p

Huh.. I never thought about it like that before, but I think you're right... I haven't driven stick in years, but when I did I never had any problems coordinating the moves (drummer in a former life). So now I just do the same with the mouse and keyboard. ... though I still have one of my mouse buttons mapped to a double-click. Works well for opening files too. It's like, all multi-purpose and stuff.

I've also been getting better at using my keyboard controller for more tonal input and I'll be spending some time getting more proficient with my padkontrol for drums (although I'll have to do two swipes... one for upper kit and the second for kick drums which might be weird but I think it will work). So doing that with Input Quantize, slowing down tempos for input or outright step recording I'll likely end up spending very little time meticulously inputting data into the PRV with the trackball. Just editing and tweaking. We'll see though but creating drum parts in particular with the PRV isn't nearly as much fun as hammering away with my hands.

Actually nobody changed it. The tool has become so smart, it is now changing itself. It cannot be stopped.

Hi Beepster... Dbl-click to add a note? I didn't even know that... I've been using Alt-click... Keni

Tho I still find it hard to make my edits as accurate with the new paradigm, they can be done very quickly... I'm not sure which procedure you're using here, but I use the smart tool almost exclusively these days.... I can drag select the bottom portion of a track and perform whatever edit quickly... Not that many edits require a lot of precision and it can often be hard to get start/end points without going through changes... I still found the accuracy of my earlier (8.5.3 and previous) method easier and faster for those.... but time will tell with some of the new tools in speed comping.... I hope to find out first hand someday... Keni

That actually may be a big part of the equation... I "play in" way more MIDI than I manually enter in the PRV. For me, the PRV is more for editing and adding notes where needed.

I found this really weird at first when it changed in X2. After a few days, I came to the conclusion it was much better. I find it really quick to use now. I think it's not go obviousness on its side though. I'd say set aside an hour, messing around with all the gestures while looking in the help file about it. For me, I now only change tools from the smart tool about once every three months, seriously.

The PRV is where it's changed the most, but those changes make PRV editing more similar to editing everywhere else, once you click with it.

Same here. I use the Smart Tool all the time, and only switch to others rarely. One of the main times I switched was whilst comping, to use the Isolate tool, but with the new fast comping, I think even that will be redundant.

The biggest change I remember is the change from lasso being on left click to it being on right click, and left click now being a different type of selection. It completely threw me at first, but it's actually loads more useful the way it is now once you get used to it.
