HELP! Need to convert Pro Tools session to SONAR
Hi, can anyone help with this? A singer has sent me a Pro Tools session. She wants to come on Thursday and record vocals. I do not have Pro Tools. I work exclusively in SONAR.
My web searches have come up blank. Is there a utility that will do the job? Alternatively is there a kind soul here who has a copy of Pro Tools who could open the session and then save it in a format I can import?
The session I have includes the following folders:
AUDIO FILES - over 50 wav files of differing sizes PLUGIN SETTINGS - empty RENDERED FILES - 23 wav files of differing sizes SESSION FILE BACKUPS - 20 ptf and 21 ptx files
Also in the root folder 3 ptx, 1 ptf and 1WaveCache.wfm
Thanks in advance for anyone who can help!

See if the person at the other end can get Pro Tools to save the session as an .OMF. Sonar can open those. If not, try to see if they can export the wave files as .BWFs, then you can open them in SONAR as long as you have it set to import .BWFs at thie time stamp. There may be other ways, but I don't know of any.

she could output omf file, which you could open, as long as its all audio and there aren't any tracks actively using plugins. no conversion tools that i know of.

I've personally had terrible results with OMF. I would suggest just having them bounce all tracks and importing those, with or without fx depending on your prefs.

She MAY be able to export OMF: it depends on if her PT is version 9 or later (or if she paid for the privilege with the earlier versions). Otherwise, she will have to export the tracks. On the other hand, if you are only tracking and not mixing, she could just give you stems or a full mix sans vocals. Alas there is no "import DAW X session" tool.

Hi. Thanks for responses. I'm pretty sure she doesn't have Pro Tools. She received them from the studio where she recorded initially. Apparently she didn't enjoy the experience there and wanted to come to me to record her parts again. I'll check with her though.

Here's what I've done in the past...request all of the audio tracks be sent as .wav files, with no effects. Even if you have the plugin data, they won't work because more than likely they were PT plugs that were used. Just make sure the .wav files are all exported from her PT session from the same start time, otherwise they won't line up when you import them into Sonar.

see if they can export as Broadcast waves, which would be time stamped.

swamptooth on the import end or export end?
Import, mainly. It never worked in one go and I always spent way more time fixing things than I would have if I'd just gotten wavs of each track. I've never really tried export, I just bounce tracks to disk.

Actually there is Pro Convert by SSL and AATranslator, both of which convert between DAWs, but they are both paid software and have limited ProTools support (the former only goes up to 7). Also the problem with ProTools is there are not necessarily equivalents of all RTAS/AAX plugs, so you'll lose plugin settings at least. When I tried to use a ProTools made OMF I ended up having to use a trial version of Reaper to load it, and then export the tracks as wavs to load in Sonar. It's really not worth the hassle, IMHO.

Starting to worry now that my only option is to see if she has a stereo mix so I can hear what it should sound like, then experiment bringing all the wavs in and put them all where I think they go. Hours of fun guaranteed.

I work with PT and Sonar. There is no way of doing this without trial and error. OMF is the way to go but that can kick up errors. (trial and error) 100% the best way is to get stems from PT to import into Sonar.

Stems is definitely the way to. I've received stems before. That's fine. It's the not having any access to PT to create them that's the stumbling block here.

This is the easiest way. As stated as long as they all start at the same place. If they do its simple!

If you have the .wav files you can just select them and drag them in to a blank Sonar Track View field. That worked for me, and they did NOT all start in the same place... I assume they are time coded somehow. You can try and see what happens (it worked in X2 and still in X3 for me with Pro Tools wavs).

If you ever NEED pro Tools, just buy one of those cheap Avid interfaces, as they included a free version of PT Express. However, it is very limited. And if you are in a crunch, just download the 30 day trial (you just need an iLok).

Either use the import function or drag and drop from the media browser or windows explorer. If the files are broadcast wave files, where the files are placed in the track depends on the Preferences > File > Audio Data "Always Import Broadcast Waves At Their Timestamp" setting. If the files are not broadcast waves they will line up at the Now Time.

Well blow me down! Would you look at that. I've imported them and they've all put themselves in the right places. Who'd have thunk it? Thanks people. I now have a new problem. She wants the song in a different key. I've not transposed audio for a few years. Remember it being a total pain with unusable results. I think I should save this question for a new thread.
Thanks again.

While ProConvert may be limited to version 7 of PT for the PC, AATranslator on the other hand will read from version 5 of PT up to and including version 10 and probably version 11 (we haven't finalised testing of version 11 PTX files yet). AATranslator will also read far more detail than ProConvert can from any version of PT. I suspect that my understanding of the term 'limited' may differ somewhat None of us like being caught in these sort of situations - its not always about sales we are also here to help so don't hesitate to contact us for assistance

That's great to hear. I actually have never used either, I'm going by hearsay. Much better to have a developer give input about cans and can'ts.
