Is there a simple way (not going into each individual track) to lower the "overall" volume of the recording? I like the balance between tracks that I have, and don't want to go back and lower each track individually. It's just that the drums sometimes cause some clipping problems on output. Any thoughts? Thanks!
Here's my thoughts. In the back of your mind, you already know what you need to do, don't you?
It may be a few hours more of work, but the song is forever. It's worth the time.
Do all of your tracks go through your master bus? If yes, you have better options.
You can reduce the output of the master bus, lowering the overall volume. This is usually a less than ideal sollution, and I prefer to leave my master output set to 0.
You can also insert a limiter (did SHS7XL come with Boost 11?) in the FX bin of the master bus. Used judiciously, this can control the peaks without reducing the overall perceived volume.
Ultimately, you may still need to go back and adjust your source tracks.
Listen, adjust, step back, listen again. Right now, you know it's not right. When you know it is, you'll be glad you put in the effort.
