Really odd questions to help me decide to get X3

Hello all,

This is my first post. Now that Sonar has ARA I am thinking of getting X3. A few questions to help me decide.

1. If you partially overlap two audio clips on an audio track and turn off cross-fade will I hear both audio clips? I hope so.

2. Can I bounce in place the two audio clips?

3. Can I bounce two audio clips that are on separate audio tracks?

4. Can I draw a volume envelope directly on an audio clip then bounce it in place?

5. Is CAL still around?

6. Are MFX included?

7. Since Sonar X3 is touch screen ready is it wise to get a touch screen?

8. Is there a demo available to try out before purchasing?

Please answer some or all or post links. Thanks in advance.

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. Yes
4. Yes
5. Yes there are 37 scripts included
6. Yes
7. The choice is yours. Wisdom doesn't come into it.
8. Not yet. Typically not till the last planned update has been released. X3c is already on the drawing board and we expect release before end of year. Your guess is as good as mine.

5. Yes but there are only about 8 scripts included

Mike, there may be something you may have forgotten to install or something. I see 37 in my X3/CAL Scripts folder....42 total counting my 5 custom ones that I pasted after the X3 install. Actually, I just checked Sonar X1 through to X3 and they all have 37 in them by default in each folder. Try another install and make sure you use advance install followed by "custom install". Then make sure you have CAL files selected and you should get all 37.

Looks like I will be buying Sonar X3 Studio. A trail/demo would have been great and may have pushed me to buy the Producer.

Thanks for answering my questions. And glad they were yeses!

Vas,

I see that you also use Cubase 7. Many of the basic tasks that you do there are very similar in Sonar X3 just in a different place. For example, when you click on a wave clip in Cubase, it will open up the wave editor window. In X3 the same click will open the Loop creation/editor window. At first this may seem like X3 is missing that clip editor function but in reality, the track view workspace of X3 allows you constant access to edit clips ( split, fade, cut, delete, ect  ) in real time without having to open up any additional windows...simply enlarge the track window and your there.

The workflow is very similar and you will be up and running in no time. If you like the track effects in Cubase, your going to love the Pro Channel in the Producer version of x3. Intuitive, graphically useful, and crazy powerful! The new pop out RTA graph inside/behind the EQ window is worth the price of admission alone. Its like having the Cubase version of Voxendo built right into the plug without having to open up anything....fast and sounds killer!!

Try it...give your self time to adjust to the differences...and you wont regret it.

Featherlight and All,

I am hoping that in X3 to get the best of Cubase 7 and Studio One 2. The addition of ARA on X3 is what made me look at Sonar. I already have Melodyne so Sonar is a natural contender.

Mudgel’s positive reply to my questions got me closer to deciding to buy. Most of those features in OP can be done in Studio One but not in Cubase. #4 no in S1 but yes in Cubase. But Cubase has no ARA. Sonar has good midi fx thought not as complete as Cubase but I am at the moment overlooking that.

Thanks for mentioning that the workflow in Sonar is similar to Cubase.

The forum here has been very helpful so is an additional plus to consider.

The Prochannel in the Studio includes 2 audio FX vs 8 for the Producer. If I had a trial versions I just might get the Producer.

I am however very disappointed that Cakewalk disallows the touch screen function with Windows 7 forcing one to get Windows 8. This is the sticking point for the final decision.

Yeh a typo on my part Danny, thanks for letting me know. I've actually got 38 in my current folder, out of the many I have . There must be an extra one I have, as I don't use the Cakewalk default folder. I've gone back to edit the post.

I actually have quite a large collection of a Cal scripts that I've scrounged up over the years of using Cakewalk software.

Just remember that Windows 7 wasn't optimized to work with touch, whereas with Win 8, touch functionality was at the forefront of design criteria.

I don't think there is a "definitive list" anywhere. It's just over the last 15 years or so I've accumulated cal scripts from a variety of sources as I've come across them.

Someone else asked me for a copy of all of them. As I explained to them, I've just rebuilt my studio PC to accommodate Win 8.1 and the backup drive with all my cals is stored away. I'll get it out in the next week or so and upload them to Dropbox or something and give folks a link.

Actually if you google cal scripts there probably still a lot of info about them, you may even find information about the cal scripting language.
