Just Because
Here is a little number about a guy that has the smarts to avoid falling in love with someone that is too much in love with herself. I realize that this number is out of my genre comfort zone but one has got to try something different every once in awhile -- doesn't one? Since it is out of my comfort area any crits, suggestions, and comments will be appreciated. Thanks. JUST BECAUSE http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_music.cfm?bandID=963481 Freddy J

Cute song Freddy. The mix sounds pretty good to me overall. The one thing that I think needs more attention is the vocals. Usually when I mix pop songs I take a lot off the low frequencies of all the backing vocals, and boost the highs making them sound more "airy" so they don't compete as much with the lead vocal. The way you have it mixed it's hard to tell which one you intended to be the "lead" vocal. Also, you might want to run your vocals through Melodyne if you can, to make them blend better. Some of the pitches sound a little off, and IMO pitch is very important in this kind of song. Very nice effort!

We all knew someone like that I'm pretty sure.... On the harmonies, cool ....I know you put a lot of work into them..... I'm working on some now... it can be a hair pulling sort of frustration at times. I tend to lower the level of my BGV and harmonies as well as thinning them out .... the constant use of 3 part harmony got a bit boring for me after a while. I try to use it more as a ****e and more so on the chorus rather than the entire tune. Even groups known for their vocal talents don't use it all the time. Overall, I like the tune...

My favorite tune by you for awhile, Freddy. It is different for you and that's good. Not so sure about the lead. It did give it a 60s sound which can work. You did a nice job on this song, Freddy. Herb had some good harmony advice.

I like it Freddy. Are the harms live or generated? Either way they sound good. It has a 60s feel and being that I grew up musically there it's "comfortable".

Nice song Freddie, Has a real creative concept to it and instrumentally sounds awesome. Because I'm not big on vocals, I will leave that to others and their tastes. I think you sung the song good but maybe all the harmony is throwing me off, but to me it was creative, so I liked it. Nice song and lyrics. Peace and Blessings, John

Freddy, Freddy, Freddy - you are just the best entertainer. This is so much fun. I must be hearing about 10 Freddy's singing. You just seem to be getting better every time you put out a song. I really like this one - fantastic.

"about a guy that has the smarts to avoid falling in love with someone that is too much in love with herself" I love myself on average about once a day... Sometimes twice? WAIT!!?? Are we talking about the same thing? This gave me a Beatles vibe actually. Good job Freday.

Walt and Herb: Thank you both for your advice on the vocals. I appreciate it. At my advancing stage of maturity (how do you like that for saying old) my pipes are resisting singing. I was going for a different sound on this one and thought of the group sing style of the Hollies but I was dreaming -- I can't hit those notes that Graham Nash used to get. I hadn't intended for there to be a lead vocal -- maybe I should re-think that. I can go back and fiddle with the volume and EQ but I'll have to study up on Melodyne. I am a bit of a Luddite when it comes to devices such as that. I am working on 2 or 3 other numbers right now, so it might be a little while before I get back to fixing up the vocals (unless my OCD gets the best of me ---lol). Thanks again. Hey Warren: Thanks for the feedback. Ya, the lead is a bit different than most. I'm not sure about it either. I was going for a bit of a chaotic feeling that one might feel in such a relationship. I guess I might have over-thought that? ;>) I'm really enjoying the new stuff that you are putting out . Thanks again. Hi Bapu! The harms are live or as alive as I can make them. I was going for that '60's sound, so I'm glad that I got somewhere close with this number. Thanks for the listen and comments. Thank you John. The vocals seem to be the main point of concern with this song. I am going to have to go back and fiddle around with them and maybe do a re-do? I appreciate your input. Thanks. Hey Mark. Thank you buddy. I have really been enjoying the songs that you have been putting out with Warren and others. Not only are they well done but they are very creative. Thanks again. Robaaay! How are you! Love myself? Oooooh, no I don't think we are talking about the same thing. :>) Thanks for the kind comments!

I'm about to love myself again... It's important to love yourself? (may be talking about something different, acknowledge) If you do not? It's likely that no one else will? I think Dewey Cox said it best? "You've got to love your man..." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wCH4dSD7RQ "He's not so bad, what with the singing and the playing and the shaking of the tookus?" I think I'm going to f'ing cover this song... (no disrespect to anyone, it's a combo parody/tribute, I think it's one of the best movies ever, and one of the best songs from the movie) I still like Freddy's tune!! :-D And love your man, "Just Because?"

You do such a good job at getting that old 50's or 60's guitar sound. This is a good one!

Hi Freddy, this is a pleasant surprise as it shows your versatility as a songwriter. I thought the vocals are blended quite well and have heft, though, that's just my personal taste. The only thing that caught my attention was the lack of bass guitar in the mix. The drums are there and well mixed, but I missed the opposing pull of the bass. I hear a one note pattern where a walking pattern might be interesting. However, this song is still a gem, and I will be listening several more times.

Wish I could get that 60's harmony vibe so well. Very cool! Only gripe is the drums sound a bit program-y (mainly the fast snare fills). Otherwise that was a real cool tune.

Reminds me of the old Bob & Joe Shelton song from way, way back. Sounds very good. Enjoyed the listen.

Hi Lynn: Thanks for the great feedback. I get what you are saying about the bass on this song. I became a bit enthralled by the bass drum in this song. There is a bass guitar in this song but I was trying to blend it to the bass drum. I guess rather than complementing or countering the bass drum it became swallowed up by it. Thanks again. Hi Scott: Thanks for the kind comments. I use mostly loops for drums and one of the headaches that I have is trying to match fills with the main beats. Most of the time your choices are limited and don't do what you would like them to do. I am not competent enough right now on programming drums ---- but ---- I'm working on it. Thanks for the listen and feedback Chas. I had to look up and listen to the Bob and Joe version of the old song Just Because. It was a great listen. Those guys had some great harmonies didn't they. Thanks for bringing them to my attention.
