RME FF UFX popping and clicking in X3

Anyone else notice this?
Its popping loudly too. Its everytime I PLAY, stop, or the driver changes state (audio engine on/off)
Almost unusable. This is with driver 3.080

That sounds totally unusable! No problem here with my UFX in X3, although I'm connected via USB.  Some things that come to mind to check:
    • Buffer Size? Do the pops/clicks change at different buffer sizes? I'm running my UFX with a sample rate of 48k. I run 128 samples for tracking and 1024 samples for mixing/mastering with no issues in Win 8.1. This is with the Octamic II connected so I'm tracking up to 12 channels when recording with drums.
    • You are current with the FireWire driver. Have you updated the firmware on UFX?
    • Have you tried connecting with USB? I tried both and found the USB connection to have less pops/clicks at lower latencies on my machine. Others have had better luck with FireWire, so it's good to try both and see what works best on your machine. The latest USB driver for Windows is 1.036.
The UFX is an amazing interface. Good luck getting it up and running.

My UFX works great with USB and X3.  Check your audio settings (e.g. buffers) and make sure you are using ASIO drivers

Yes, make sure your driver mode is correct. Does this happen in new projects?

Following up on this thread. I had major issues with pops and clicks when I tried using firewire with my UFX.  Totally unusable.  USB definitely works better, but there are still issues.  For example, if I change the buffer size at all (even increasing it) I get garbled playback until I restart Sonar.  Also, I get some pops and clicks when exporting audio - not on the rendered file, but I hear it as it is mixing down.  Lastly, there is the ongoing issue I know others have noticed as well that there is a lag when clicking the track arm button.  All of this suggests to me that Sonar and the UFX are somehow not communicating properly.  Note I do not have these issues with 8.5 on the same computer.

I am on driver 1.038 and firmware 352. I am wondering if I need the firmware update for my performance issues. I am seeing the popping on start/stop too in X3.
I am gonna flash the UFX to 353 and see how that works.

Given there appears to be differences between using FW or USB (at least on my system), it would be helpful if those who have experience can say which type of connection they are using.

On both my systems I use the ufx with I have not seen this issue on either firewire or USB. Currently I'm running the ufx on my i7 laptop using the USB connection.

The new firmware may have helped reduce the lag when I click the record arm button, or it may be wishful thinking.  Performance overall seems better.  The issue with changing sample rates is the same, and I still get some pops and clicks when exporting or making edits to prefences.

The lag on the record arm button is a classic interface problem. When I originally got my Focusrite Saffire I had exactly the same issue until Focusrite got rid of the bug from their drivers. So this is definitely without a shadow of a doubt drivers or firmware in my mind (the two go hand in hand). Well that's what I think... Cheers..

    Further thoughts...

If you haven't already please try disabling Allow Arm changes During playback/record.
in Edit > Preferences > Project -> Record (this worked for me whilst I waited for Focusrite to fix my issue)

And also try experimenting with disabling or enabling with Always Stream Audio though FX in Edit > Preferences > Audio -> Playback and recording.

RME as stated that the new firmware has nothing to do with performance per se, but has mostly to do with win8 compatibility and some DSP fix.

With that said, I have a line6 dream rig that has all kinds of firmware updates with all of the items included in the kit. Line6, don't get me started on them either, has stated that you may have to reflash an existing firmware twice to make sure it took on the unit. My thoughts were, you have to be kidding. But they weren't.

I do not know if that is what happened here with my UFX or not. I do know that before X3, I had zero pops and crackles during recording or playback. Seems to me several RME users are the majority of reporters on this issue with X3. I am glad it isn't just me too. :-D

It would be nice if the bakers could borrow a RME FF UFX, UCX or one of their other higher end interfaces to see what performance testing they can do to help us RME users out.

Which Firewire TI chipset?...cause they are not all the same chipsets...and TI (texas Instruments make a few chips for firewire)...not all Ti chips work well with all devices...So, what does the fire face manufacture suggest to use for the Fireface ufx?..=TI chipset xxx1324....and follow suit I say...If that does not work...Perhaps updating the firewire computer interface to a 800/400 1394b version card, may gain better legacy Windows Driver for win 8, and disabling onboard firewire chip...may help.

Possibly solved!  I decided to try some different drivers instead of ASIO.  None worked very well, all having various glitchy audio.  But once I went back to ASIO my performance was *much* better.  The clicks when arming or disarming tracks is gone.  The lag when arming tracks is gone.  Closing the preferences window now takes half a second, not 3-4 seconds as before. Overall it is like I got a nice driver update.

The only thing I can think of is that with ASIO Sonar does not run its sound card profiler, which it does with every other type of driver.  So as I changed drivers the profiler ran several times.  Perhaps running the profiler did something to smooth out the ASIO communication.

In any event, I am very pleased, but wary the fix could be temporary.  I am very curious if this would help others who have had similar problems.  Also curious if anyone has a logical reason why this should work, as I though using ASIO drivers meant profiling the sound card is not necessary.
