Sonar X2a, Komplete 9, 32 and 64 bit plug-ins

Hello.  I'm running sonar X2a 64 bit on Win 7 64 bit.  I recently purchased Native Insturments Komplete 9, and installed it.  The install instructions say that 32 bit plug-ins and 64 bit plug-ins should not be placed in the same folder, so I created separate folders for the 32 bit plug-ins and 64 bit plug ins.

Once installed, I noticed that the 32 bit plug in folder contains the same list of plug-ins as the 64 bit plugin folder.  Given that I am using a 64 bit version of Sonar, and will be using the 64 bit plug ins (I doubt I will ever use the 32 bit plug ins), is it safe for me to simply delete the 32 bit plugin folder?

Thanks in advance.

Do not delete the 32-bit folder, as you may at some point need to work in 32-bit Sonar, and need access to those plugins.

I would simply not include that 32-bit plugin path to the search path for your x64 Sonar, and it will not see them and not therefore use them.

I have Komplete 8 Ultimate, and though I nearly always work in 64-bit Sonar and 64-bit Komplete plugins, there are some projects that require me to work in 32-bit Sonar, due to requirements for some 32-bit plugins that do not like running in 64-bit Sonar.  I then do it all in 32-bit land.

If that never is an issue for you, then you do not need the 32-bit plugins.

well you might wanna delete all the foreign language PDF's they used to install *if* they still do it.. it was stupid amount of Mb's wasted due to their silly installers. Used to be a fan of NI , but their customer "service" makes me shop elsewhere now.

the main part of kontakt is the library of sounds , not the programs/dll's / vsts' themselves which are small compared

I just keep all of my unused 32 bit plugins (and RTAS versions in case I ever have to use PT again ) in a folder called "Unused Plugins" which isn't scanned by Sonar.

If I can jump in with a related question,,, what is the advantage of running a 64 bit plug as opposed to a 32 bit plug, as long as either version works??  (something I'm not clear on)

I understand that running a host in 64 bit gives you access to more RAM, but as long as Sonar takes care of that for you and as long as either Bitbridge or jBridge fixes the plug so it runs in Sonar at 64 bit,,, isn't that the main thing?

It's usually better if the plug exists as a 64 bit version because you avoid possible issues with jBridge or Bitbridge doing it "on the fly". Not all plugins work with jBridge or Bitbridge and using either one takes up some system resources, even if those are quite small.
The basic idea of a 64 bit plug is the same, if you have a 64 bit plug it has access to more RAM. I don't think it's currently very interesting, but who knows how big sample libraries may get in the future. You may actually need more than 4 GB in a single Kontakt instance.

Hello and thanks to everyone who responded - lots of good information here.

I like the idea of keeping a folder of unused plug-ins that are not scanned by Sonar - I wil try that.

I understand the plug-in .dlls are very small in size compared to the library of sound files.  The sound files I have placed on a separate HD, so I have no problems there.  The issue of the folder of 32-bit plug-ins is more a matter of organization and housekeeping for me than of space on the HD.

Don't do it. Leave the 32-bit plug-ins in place. There are some plug-ins that are 32-bit only, but work fine on 64-bit architecture.

Well I didn't see any in Komplete 9 Ultimate.

Yes it's really annoying that NI's installers don't give me the option NOT to install 32 bit plugins like other installers do. As people say here simply install the 32 plugins to a file path that is not known to Sonar. Not one of NI's plugins are actually exclusively 32 bit (well that's what I saw), so useless for those with 64 bit environments.
