Automation

I've been trying to repeat steps to automate some cuttoff in Omnisphere.  I've been sitting here for almost 4 hours trying to figure this out.  I got it to do what I wanted to do and now I can't for whatever reason. I've been reading the user guide. It's just not making sense to me. And for a minute there when I finally got to where I can manipulate the nodes, every time I did something it would pop out into the clips menu. Why does it do this? Why doesn't it stay where you are until you manually go back to the clips pane? It's an automation track. Why would you need it to ever be a clips pane?  I have the selection for SYNTH AUTOMATION TRACK =3. That's the track I'm trying to get the automation on. If I hit record, it records the little boxes and vertical lines. I don't want that. I've tried read enable and write enable and play, record and everything else.. but I'm not getting the nodes... I did earlier. 
 
Is there any videos or understandable documentation anywhere? This just isn't working out for me. Grrrrr.
