Takes being split up into multi segments

Hi all, Im coming out of my head here and I have tried searching for solution in forms and on web and has yielded no results.

My problem is...I am recording multiple takes of vocals sometimes doing punch in and punch outs for the desired bar time....
Well I have tried setting the preferences/project/record to: comping, overwrite and sound on sound and no matter what I do my take clips are being split into so many smaller slices than I can wrap my brain around....I like have to zoom into hundreds of miliseconds to select the clips and glue them all back together.

(As i am recording the new take.....the takes I have previously layed down are the ones getting split up...not the take that I am currently putting down...it is fine till i lay something else down...they only get split up if i am laying something down over a time frame that something else already exists in the track)

A) what am I doing wrong lol
B) is there a setting that I am overlooking that disables this autosplit on record?

Thank you for your assistance!

I think you're in the wrong forum. Comp recording mode is new to X3, and this forum is for Pre-X series releases. Comp recording mode is the only one that should split clips. It automatically splits off and mutes the parts of the previous takes that are overlapped by a new take so you can choose which piece of which take you want to hear on playback. Clicking any clip with the Comp tool (Smart Tool used in the bottom half of the clip) will make it audible, and mute all other clips in the same time period. You can heal the splits by swiping through any of the takes with the Comp tool. If you don't want this at all, you can use Sound on Sound mode in combination with manual muting and punch in as needed to get what you want.

Cool. Glad to help. Actually I stumbled in here by accident, too, but all the thread titles with "8" in them gave it away.

Cheers, and welcome to the forum.
