TH2 Gate vs. Sonar gates for distorted guitar tracks?
As I contemplate marching into trying out a bunch of my new found mixing knowledge I'm wondering... Should I allow my sims to control the gating on my guitar or should I use the PC/included Sonar plugs? Specifically I've been using TH2 and think the gate is pretty good but I think that some of the fancier Cake gates I have may do a better job at cutting out unwanted noise. I trim my guitar clips pretty close anyway but as things fade in and out I can definitely hear the TH2 gate doing it's thing and considering it's turned up pretty high due to the very heavy distortion it may be kicking in throughout the take. So... when you guys get to your final mixes do you rely on your sim's gate or do you turn it right off and use more refined tools? What works better? The simpler PC stuff (I own the PC Expander/Gate) or perhaps is messing with the Sonitus Gate worth the extra effort? Cheers.

I like, and use on a regular basis, the PC4K Expander/Gate. Sometimes I find using it in Expander mode can yield better results than in Gate mode on some tracks. It can take some tweaking (as opposed to just threshold and on/off in some gates) but it's worthwhile.

I may be out in left field here, but with reference to distortion etc. do i infer from your post Beep that the gate is after the TH2?.. if so, how about gate prior, just to clean the input then leave the fx tails to their own devices?

X3 Producer has the Nomad Factory Gate also. I haven't tried it yet but it's another option.

Interesting idea. I will look into that. Not sure how well that'll work out as dead silence on the input results in noise from the sim at such high gain levels but it is certainly another angle to look at. Perhaps a gate beforehand to remove any potential noise would make it so the post sim gate good be left open a little wider. Thanks.

Beep, for convenience when using th2, I use their gate. May not be the best, but less clicking and more playing.
StudioCat > I use Windows 10 and Sonar Platinum. I have a touch screen. I make some videos. This one shows how to do a physical loopback on the RME UCX to get many more equalizer nodes.

I hadn't really thought about it before, but I like the idea of using a separate gate plugin post-TH2 just for more control over how the signal is gated.

It's great for playing along with my weird little practice compositions and tracking but I find there is a little warble from the TH2 gate particularly noticeable on fade ins/out and the effect loses its tone. That last bit may be a Pre/Post issue but IIRC I tried messing around with Pre/Post FX bin settings and it didn't help much. Basically I think I'll use the TH2 (or GR5 or whatever) internal gate just to keep the sim from being distracting/annoying while jamming along/tracking but try the other stuff when it comes time to mix. Now that I know more about the Sonitus Gate I think that has all the flexibility I need to really keep the heavily distorted stuff under control without washing anything out. I just wasn't sure if I was being weird by thinking this but I guess not. Hooray! ;-)

I tend to gate before the Amp Sim. Sometimes after, as well, but always before. The Sonitus gate is good, I just prefer the ease of use of the PC.
