[SOLVED] X2 + BFD: Why is my MIDI bounce not working?
Okay, this is getting to be too much. This should be straightforward. I am trying to create an audio clip of the kick output from BFD. It is just a test so I know it will work when I go to bounce all the other pieces. I have tried multiple options in the bounce menu and nothing is working. I only get a flatlined track with no audible output. I select the audio track for the kick that is being fed by BFD. BFD is set to Offline (and I've tried leaving it Online). In the track view menu I select Tracks > Bounce to Track(s) and the dialog opens In the dialog I select the Kick track as the source and allow it to create a new track (I also tried letting it write to the original audio track but it still flatlined and I THOUGHT I was getting sound but now I realize it was the live output from BFD not the audio clip). I tried multiple configurations in this dialog but none of those should have made a difference. I still should have gotten a working clip. After I wait for the bounce to complete the new track is there but there is no wave and there is no audible output. What am I doing wrong? This is supposed to work. Frack!! Thank you for any advice on this matter. Cheers.

I just did the following a dozen or more freaking times trying all sorts of different things trying to make this work and am still getting nothing. THIS IS DRIVING ME CRAZY!!! Converting your soft synth tracks to audio Once your project sounds the way you want it to, it’s extremely easy to convert your soft synth MIDI tracks to either new audio tracks, or Wave, MP3, or other exported files. You can also do a temporary conversion, called freezing. See Freeze tracks and synths for more information. To convert your soft synth tracks to new audio tracks 1. Mute all tracks that you don’t want to convert. 2. Click the Track view Tracks menu and choose Bounce to Track(s). The Bounce to Track(s) dialog box appears. 3. In the Destination field, choose a new or pre-existing track to put the new audio data on. 4. If you’ve saved presets from previous bounce operations, you can choose a preset from the Preset field. 5. In the Source Category field, choose Tracks. 6. In the Channel Format field, choose mono if you want a mono track, stereo if you want a stereo track, and split mono if you want to create separate mono tracks. 7. In the Source/Buses field, choose the output bus(es) that the soft synth tracks are using (usually the main outputs). 8. In the Mix Enables field, make sure all choices are selected. 9. Click OK. SONAR creates new audio tracks from the outputs you selected. When you’re through converting, don’t forget to mute your MIDI tracks so you won’t hear them and the new audio track(s) at the same time.

If I select THIS....
5. In the Source Category field, choose Tracks.
Then I don't get busses for THIS in the list...
7. In the Source/Buses field, choose the output bus(es) that the soft synth tracks are using (usually the main outputs).
All I get is a list of selected tracks, which SHOULD be the output "bus" for the synth but that doesn't work. Even if I select the busses in the project they don't show up in that list if I have Tracks selected. If I choose any other of the other options instead of tracks I can see the busses but if I select any one of those I still get nothing... oh one time I got a bunch of random tracks that weren't selected and were muted but completely dry but I DIDN'T get the Kick I was trying to bounce. I have no idea what the heck that was about. See now... this would be a good time for a Baker to actually step in and say something to HELP me figure this out. Not give me a hard time because I don't like the new pricing scheme. Cripes. Completely wasted afternoon.

Did you have MIDI track selected as well as audio? I just selected all outs plus MIDID track, bounced them all to separate racks. I tend to freeze the synth as it's a lot easier.

I believe I did try that configuration a couple times. I will try again. You mean select the actual tracks in the Track View right? It doesn't seem to appear in the bounce dialog. I am also just trying to do one track but I guess I'll select all of them to see if that makes a difference. Thanks for the effort jb. Kind of going a little crazy here. Cheers.

Select synth audio out for bass derum. Select MIDI track as well. Bounce to tracks, choose "tracks", and make sure your bass drum track is highlighted. Bingo. If you don't select MIDI track = flatline. I use fast bounce as it's quicker... Never done this before just now, as I use freeze synth, but it is pretty straightforward and quick, so may play around with it some more.

Yes, selecting the actual MIDI track as well as the Kick track worked. Nowhere does it even mention anything about selecting anything. I had tried at one point to select the MIDI track but it told me no audio was selected so I must not have had the Kick selected as well. What a run around. But at least now I know. Thank you VERY much, jb. You just prevented a studio fire with that tidbit.

Yes... straightforward now that I know about the selection method. You'd think they'd put that little step in the friggen' manual. Anyway all is well now. No arson has occurred. Just a wasted afternoon and a couple burst blood vessels. Thanks again jb. Cheers.

I guess without the MIDI track selected there is no sound. MIDI track + synth out = sound. I guess you could have several MIDI tracks controlling the same synth, and Sonar would need to know which one to bounce. I first tried it by just selecting the Audio out. When all I got was a flatline, I selected Audio and MIDI track and it worked. I just looked at the manual, and can see how it might mislead. It just states "Mute all the tracks that you don't want to hear", so I guess we want to hear the MIDI track with the synth, yes? Glad you're sorted.

Yeah but both tracks were unmuted as stated. Just not selected (at the same time). This isn't the first time I've been messed up because the manual has left out crucial info or been outright wrong. Usually I can sort it out but it just wasn't happening today. Too complex and I had already lost my temper which never helps. Cheers.

Lets try this scenario. We have a MIDI track with drum notes on it. We will use the synth rack to install a drum sample player. In my case it will most likely be BFD2. The Browser holds the synth rack. As you install this player a dialog will appear that allows one to set up how the player will work with Sonar. I most often want all synth outputs stereo. For a drum synth mono is a good option. When this is done click OK and Sonar will load the player and create a number of audio tracks that have as their input the audio out of the synth. Next I simply route the MIDI track's output to the input of the drum player I also load the kit I want to be used. After adjusting the MIDI also known as editing, when satisfied I freeze it after I have set the internal routing the way I want it. That is each sound going to its own audio track. Going back to the synth rack I hit freeze of that synth. Sonar starts creating audio in each track. From there I can do anything I wish to the audio. But I can also unfreeze it and start over if I wish. With a freeze the the synth is bypassed and the MIDI is muted.

Thanks JB. I stopped using bounce many years ago. Sonar's freeze is so powerful I see no reason to use anything else. I recall when it first appeared and that I couldn't believe how good it was especially compared to Cubase's version.

No need to thank me, John. I have learned a lot of my knowledge from you. I have seen some criticism of freezing on here lately, but I think it is from misunderstanding it's power. If I want to preserve the audio when I unfreeze, I can always ctrl+drag the wav to an audio track.

Perhaps the title of this thread (Re: X2 + BFD: Why is my MIDI bounce not working?) needs changing, as you know why your MIDI bouncing was not working - you weren't including any MIDI in the bounce..

In the X3 reference manual in the chapter on "software instruments' under the heading "convert soft synth tracks to audio". In this version it's on page 864/5. Hope it helps to know these things are in the manual.

Do you have any of bfd's outputs archived? This has bugged me sine X1... If such is the situation (I archive and hide outputs not being used), freeze/bounce gives through it's work and then leaves all the tracks empty... Maybe for you?

I'm not sure I understand your question. I don't see a need to do any track archiving when using freeze. If and when I am completely done with a synth I will for cosmetic reasons delete empty tracks.

While still working in MIDI, I have unused outputs archived to lighten the CPU load and I must remember to unArchive them before attempting to freeze or the freeze fails and leaves the tracks empty. I know I don't need this after the freeze but I do times forget as the archived outputs are typically hidden at that point... So I was thinking he might have a track in such a state thereby causing it to leave all tracks empty after performing all the work to create the freeze...

The problem Keni is Beep uses bounce not freeze. We are attempting to persuade him to use freeze.

I tried convincing him last week, in a couple of pretty lengthy posts (for me ) that freezing the synth was the way to go. I never bounce to track. I bounce Midi to clip quite a bit, but never to track, unless it's a one off for converting 2 mono tracks into a stereo track. You should try it Beep, I'm 100% convinced it will give you the results you want/expect

@ John, Jonesey... Thanks, guys. I tried the Freeze option before moving on to this method. It will indeed work and may become my default way of doing this. I know you guys think I'm being weird (which I probably am) but as I was saying in the other thread this is more of an educational exercise so I wanted to get this method down as well. After all this is done and I've moved on to other projects I will be taking a closer look at the exact differences between the two so I can make an informed decision as to what course of action to take in specific situations. If I use freeze for something like this I would indeed be copying the waves generated into new tracks. I just want to make sure that I am not going to experience any unforeseen consequences like reduced flexibility or audio quality while using one or the other. Also I may need to use similar features elsewhere so having an idea of the more traditional bouncing method may come in handy. Knowledge is power and you guys have consistently provided me with knowledge and extra options. Thanks again for your ideas even if I'm being weird. ;-p @Keni... Thanks for the insight. All seems to be under control now. Just a silly missed step but I'll watch out for the problems you mentioned. Cheers. @jb... Thank you again for taking the time to try this out and providing the solution. I will change the title to SOLVED. Cheers.

Like I said in the other thread, I start mixing as soon as I've got anything recorded, Midi and Audio. Freezing the synths with the correct options selected enables mixing to carry on afterwards - I'm just using Audio now, not Midi
