Happiness is a Warm Drumkit
I always wanted to do a big, raunchy, rocked out version of The Beatles 'Happiness is a Warm Gun', but I could never quite get the drums right. I need huge, but vintage. Roomy, but not too distant. Anyway, I finally created what I needed with the fantastic Indie kit in AD. GIANT SOUND! Huge! Perfect. Anyway, here she is. Supercool slide guitar courtesy of good guy Matt. https://soundcloud.com/cy...appiness-is-a-warm-gun

I like the tone of the drums and you got the 9/8, 10/8 spot on during the Mother Superior part ... cool.

Very nice version of a great song! Drums sound good. I just bought the Indie adpak last week. Are you using a stock preset or did you roll your own?

Thanks all! Quantum Effect: I wasn't really aware how difficult it was going to be going in with all the freaky time signature changes! I just knew I liked the song--how hard can it be? Yeah, freaking Beatles being all weird and cool.... ClintM: I started with a stock preset from the Indie Pack (one of the standard rock ones), then I switched out the snare to the Tama Starclassic. From there, I used the AD compression and some of the saturation and stuff to grunge-ify it. EQ and additional bus compression from Prochannel. The cool thing about the INdie pak is you don't really need to add any reverb, as the room mics supply so much ambience. The room they recorded the samples in must have been huge.

Nice little piece you all put together. Drums sound good. Glad you found what you were looking for in drums. If you want even bigger drums go to www.soundsonline.com and have a look at Storm Drums, there are three different versions. I have 1 & 2. They are vst instruments and sound awesome. very cool - it sounds a bit as if Radiohead would cover the Beatles. I know it's always tricky to cover such a classic huge song, becuase - how good can it be compared to the nearly-godlike original? But you did pretty well!

This is totally true. When I was first learning Sonar, I used to do covers all the time and try to make them as close to the original as possible. Never sounded nearly as good of course, but I learned a ton about sound creation and mixing. You can learn so much trying to match guitar tones, synth sounds, vocal effects ect. With this one, I wasn't even going to try to match it. It is just too good and too unique. I figured I would try a different approach.

I like the uniqueness of this version as well Sven. You persuaded me to pick up the Indie pack because of this song. Did you start with a particular preset for this song. The drums sound really nice.

Thanks. I did use a preset to start (although I have no idea which one). I also used the AD saturation and compression to dirty it up, then just blended in the room mics. That indie pak is just great.

The drums work well. The tone is vintage but still modern. Everything else is well done. Nice cover while still making it your own. My only criticism is the song has about 2 minutes of silence at the end. Mistake in rendering or an artistic statement. @
