(SOLVED) Slingshot Automation?

This is another one of those "I'm hoping it's already in there, but I just don't know how to do it" questions, but if it's not already possible, I'm curious if anyone would find this feature useful...

Picture this...

You're in the process of automating level adjustments near the end of a mix... You BASICALLY have the volumes for all of your tracks set to where you want them, but just need to "boost this for a second" or "lower this for a second..."

Solution:
Hold down a hotkey (does it exist?) so that when you bump the vocal track up a few notches for a spot that needs a quick boost, and then let go of the fader/mouse/whatever, as long as you're holding the "slingshot automation" hotkey, it would immediately snap back to the position you had it before giving it the quick bump in volume.

Is that currently possible? Obviously I can boost, and then quickly try to move back to where it was, and if I need a super accurate return, go adjust the automation nodes later... BUT, for the sake of being quick & efficient, IF THERE IS A HOTKEY ALREADY THAT DOES THIS, then can someone tell me what it is? Because I think that feature would be pretty cool to have available.

Anybody have a use for this? I know it's not ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY, but sometimes if I want to snap back immediately to -7.4 on a fader or something, thenit can be difficult to hit those targets in a half second live automation snap.

    • After you've moved a fader, right click it and there's an option which reads "revert to [previous value] in dB. This might help but won't work if you have a track volume envelope in  use
    • Check out offset mode - this might also help

So, For me, what I think you're asking for is achievable with volume automation. If you have automation on the track, say at 0 dB and you want to push it up a dB or two, you can use automation write.

In Track View, show the inspector for the track and click the Track Heading (of Clip, Track, ProCh). Now, notice the Time Base for Automation. (This is available on Buses too).

I think what you want is to write automation using the Touch Setting for the Write Mode on the track. In this case, it will only write the increased volume while you are clicking on the fader. Once you release the fader, it will snap back to the previously written automation which will be at 0 dB in this case as described above.

I make some videos. This one shows how to do a physical loopback on the RME UCX to get many more equalizer nodes.

NICE! I sometimes feel like automation doesn't act like I want it to, but I had no idea there were 3 settings over there for different modes! That should work perfectly (and also give control for other methods that I didn't know I can switch between). Thanks a lot! Problem solved!

How do I use automation in Sonar X3?
Obviously it's not the same as with previous versions.

Malibu, it is pretty similar to previous versions. I think it's identical to X2

I think in X2 (maybe X1 it gets blurry) we could switch envelopes to Time Base which is really useful. That means that after recording envelope automation you can modify the tempo without impacting where the automation nodes are. This works on both tracks and buses.

The automation write methods only matter if you are using a controller or writing automation or recording fader movements you make during playback within the DAW. To tell the truth, I rarely do this except to automate Synth parameters. I usually use my controller or touch-screen to set up levels at a starting point for all the tracks. Then, I spend a lot of time working out the EQs. Most of this I do in mono.

Then I spread things out in the stereo field and add reverb(s) that are complimentary. I don't put reverb on the bassier things like kick drums and bass or put a different and lighter verb then I put the main mix.

Then I create automation to notch EQ frequencies from the instruments that conflict with the vocals during the vocal verses. I also use volume automation to bring down the instruments when the vocals come up. Not a lot. 3-6 dB maybe.

You should probably get yourself one of the Sonar Power books or some of the videos that take you through some of this.
