Motu Midi Express USB XT & Windows 8?

Prob a long shot but does anyone here use this combination? BTW... I think I hate Windows 8 thus far! Just don't like the idea of wasting over $100 plus paying to go down to Windows 7

I use it - and it works fine. I just check the MOTU site every once in a while for the latest drivers (I don't even remember if they're technically for Win 8 or not) - but it works fine.

PS - Win 8.1 pro 64 bit, and SONAR X3b (soon to be X3c) 64 bit - is my setup.

There should be an icon when you click on your START button.

Or you could use Windows Explorer and find the directory where the MOTU stuff is installed...and double click the ClockWorks exe file

Thanks I found it. Unfortunately only the only ports that show in the Midi Input are the FW ports & the 828MKII port. The Midi Express does not show. And under device "None". I'm guessing it isn't installed properly. Back to drawing board.

I have the top one (I don't see a difference between the two - except for the colour). I never used Clockworks - I just installed the drivers and windows devices sees them under USB devices - and SONAR sees them.

I've been using this for years...

I have the old version.. the changes are cosmetic and also I think the ability to name inputs and outputs on the newer version.
in the express xt every input is connected to the PC and every output is available to the pc at all times. clockworks is used to cross connect inputs to outputs as a midi cross connect switch.
when you launch clockworks the gui is about 4"x4" and if empty, go to the file menu and select "express xt"
if for some reason the display is blank, power cycle the unit and try again...
dunno if any of this helps but...

It's not allowing me to select anything except "re-scan" and the ME is not showing anywhere. However I know there's a midi signal because I opened a synth got sound. I just need to be able to assign it. Sorry I have not gotten the screen shot thing down. So I'll do the 5th grade way.

I re-installed the drivers still not showing in clockworks or Sonar. Yet I'm playing a synth as I type. It's not even showing in my Device manager if it should? My FW-1884  & the 828MKII does. Gets quite frustrating when all you wanna do is turn your gear on and create some music.

Yea, there must be something with installing these drivers & Windows 8. Every piece of hardware I attempt to install on Windows 8 gives me tons of problems. I would like to get this installed so I can get my RME installed. But I don't need to fighting that many battles at once.

The  drivers are right here:
http://www.motu.com/download

Honestly - I didn't do anything special. Mind you, I've had to reinstall a few things since upgrading to Windows 8 (whenever something doesn't work right - I re-install it - which helps a lot) and also Win 8.1.

I was getting some SONAR crashed last year - and reinstalled the MOTU drivers - and it's been fine since, so a reinstall never does any harm.

In the Midi output it will not allow me to select MXPXT. It's stuck on microsoft gs wavetable. I can not figure out how to disable it. Anyone had this issue? And now I keep getting "The Device could not be opened". I'm searching the motunation.com forum. Oddly I get more feedback here

Re: Motu Midi Express USB XT & Windows 8? 2013/11/06 07:34:49 (permalink)
Five0,
Are you definitely logged in as an "administrator"? If so - maybe you need to "run as administrator" when you install the drivers?

This should be straightforward - the drivers install, and they're available in SONAR.
Also - you shouldn't need to worry about routing. The MOTU manual says, when you're using a sequencer - just set it to prg 1 "sequencer 30fps" (with a button on th efront of the device) and that's it. SONAR will take care of your routing etc.

I've been using mine for so long - I forget about it - it just works. It worked in XP, then Win 7 and then win 8 (and 8.1)

I'm not saying this to annoy you - I'm just saying that this is *supposed* to be straightforward. Sometimes that helps to troubleshoot (ie I often say "I shouldn't have to be doing all this - let me check something more fundamental...")

Yea, I always run as admin. Like I said I have it all installed. I'm just having routing issues. It's showing in Sonar & clockworks as "MXPXT". I can even get some signal. It's just doing something weird. BTW... thanks a ton for helping me to get this much figured out. We have different setups so my path will be a bit different than yours. I just have to figure it out.

You can see the 8 ports though - right? Not just mxpxt...

Yeah, I can see the ports.

You can't see because it's a still but the Sequencer 30 is constantly flashing also.

Update....

I got all the drivers installed Sonar recognizes it, I can see all the ports in my software etc... Unfortunately motu tech support said clockwork will not work with this unit. So as of now it seems this unit was a waste of $$$$! My sole reason for needing it was to use my Fantom X7 as a controller for my MV8800 with all my soft synths. Without the routing ability of clockworks all that seems impossible.
