SOLVED Unable to install 64 bit versions of X2 or X3a in Windows 8.1

See last post in this thread for the fix.

I ran into problems with X3 64 bit in 8.1  I had originally installed in it Windows 8, and it appeared to install OK and was working.  I installed the X3b patch but ran into a problem and had to abort it.   I didn't try it again as Windows 7 is my "production" system.  I had a problem with some plugins with Win 7 and X3b so I decided to try it in Windows 8.1.  When I tried to start X3b it would not start and I had an error (don't remember what it was).  I decided to try reinstalling the X3b patch again but it aborted with an error.  I decided to reinstall X3a 64 bit in Win 8.1 but it failed with Dll OCX Regsvr32.exe Exit Code 0x3.  I did a search on that and found several references to that including several for Sonar but nothing that I found was a fix.  I uninstalled X3 and restarted the PC and tried a complete new install of X3a 64 bit in Windows 8.1 but it again failed with the Regsvr32.exe error.  I then tried X2 64 bit as it had previously worked OK in Win 8 (not 8.1) and it too failed to install with the same error.  Finally, I tried an X3a install of the 32 bit version and it installed OK, and the X3b patch also installed OK (32 bit).

During my attempts to install X3a, I also tried it in Win 8 compatibility mode and that resulted in the same error failure.

As it stands now, X3b is installed as 32 bit version and working, but can't install the 64bit version.

I posted this in the other thread also:

With a Regsvr error I would suspect that it (Regsvr) is trying to write to the Registry and failing. Quite often that is a result of anti-virus software preventing the write to occur. If you have AV and it is running make sure it gets turned off when you do the install.

It wrote to the registry OK when I installed the 32 bit version.  And originally X2 and X3a installed OK with Win 8.

One of the fixes coming in X3c will be Windows 8.1 compatability.. maybe the update will solve the issues people are having with Sonar & Win 8.1  ; )

X3c update may fix it, but the problem, with mine, is that X3a and the X3b patch can't be installed as 64 bit version, what I want.   If X3c fixes it, I would need a complete new version with the "c" incorporated to install. Just having the "c" update won't really help me.

I have a similar problem. I had to roll back to 8.0 to get X2 and X3 to run. However the official 8.1 release will not let me start X3 / X2.  My roadblock dialog box: Missing MSVCR110.dll  ??

I did install X3 with virus protection turned off.

I filed a problem report last week. Nothing back from Cake yet.

Musicroom,  I have the same problem with the MSVCR110.dll.  It says reinstall the program but I can't because of another error.  Since I couldn't get the 64 bit version installed, I decided to use my Macrium backup, that was just after 8.1 upgrade, and do a drive restore.  That got me back to X3 being installed but I get the Missing MSVCR100.dll and to reinstall the program (Sonar).  But I can't reinstall Sonar, as it is now.   I have sent a problem report to Sonar tech support about not being able to install 64 bit version.  That was just this morning so who knows when I'll get a response.

I have an older Win 8 Macrium backup (before the 8.1 update).  I can use that if needed. Since Win 8 is not my main recording system I'll wait a couple of days and see if Sonar support responds with anything helpful.

Fireberd - I tried several times to get X3 running on 8.1. Interesting to me was that X3 ran perfectly on 8.1 preview. But I have to roll back to 8.0 via a good working backup to get the official 8.1 dl'd and installed. I thought since X3/X2 worked so well on 8.1 preview that I would not have any problems. I was wrong.

So far everything I tested on the official 8.1 ran except Sonar.

Did you install with administrative privileges?
That is right click installer file and select Install as Administrator. Even though you user account may have administrator privilege it's not the same. Seems a lot of computers require this of Sonar.

Check this link for info on the missing msvcr110.dll - it's from the C++ redistributable.
You may ned to download and install it.

X3c update may fix it, but the problem, with mine, is that X3a and the X3b patch can't be installed as 64 bit version, what I want.   If X3c fixes it, I would need a complete new version with the "c" incorporated to install. Just having the "c" update won't really help me.

Sonar update patches are accumulative. That is. The disc release of Sonar X3 didn't include the x3a patch like the download release did. Nonetheless, the X3b update could be applied to the disc version of X3 because it included the a +b patches rolled up into one. When X3c is released it's most likely to be an update including
    a + b + c.

As for the regsrv error with ocx dll means that one or some of the DX plugins weren't registered properly and won't work.

Re: Unable to install 64 bit versions of X2 or X3a in Windows 8.1 October 30, 13 7:13 AM (permalink)
I have the msvcr110.dll file in the two proper Windows folder locations.  Its Sonar that is not recognizing it and as the error notes, reinstalling Sonar is required to fix it.  But with the Sonar installation error, Sonar is not installing what it needs for the OCX error, Sonar can't be reinstalled.  I'm not the only one, from other posts on this and other threads, with the Windows 8.1 problems.  I don't know if the Windows version is an issue, i have 8.1 Pro.

Trying to reinstall X2, which worked OK with Windows 8 also comes up with the exact same OCX error when trying to install in Win 8.1, from a "clean" install.

Sonar X3a and the b patch install and work properly with the 32 bit version in Windows 8.1.  This is a Sonar 64 bit issue only with Windows 8.1, as Sonar X3 64 bit version installed and worked OK with the basic Windows 8.

Have you contacted technical support? No one here seems to be able to advise so it may be an issue CW needs to be aware of.

I'll second the notin of tech support esp seeing as ,you've reinstalled so many times.
There was an issue with the C++redistributable library's a few years ago that only effected some users and Cakewalk were able to sort it out.

This is a problem that definitely needs the Cakewalk touch. Be gratefully you're US based.

I have a report in to Tech Support that I submitted early yesterday.  No response yet.  However, I originally opened a program bug report, CWBRN-20980 and it was closed, fast without obviously really looking into it, saying it was an individual user problem and to open a tech support request.  As its more than me from posted reports, it would appear to be a software issue and not just an isolated user problem.

As fireberd is stating - I too have this problem. I submitted a report to Cake over a week ago and have not received a response. ??

After spending hours of installing/uninstalling (rinse/repeat) - I wiped the hard drive and installed a working backup of Win 8.1 preview. So I at least have X3 working fine for now.

On that note - I had to roll back to my safety (and fully functional) copy of Win 8 pro to install the official Win 8.1 release. You can't download it easily otherwise. The preview version has no part in this new problem. I do find it frustrating that Win 8 and Win 8.1 preview works great with X3 but Win 8.1 official release won't allow me to open anything Sonar X#. Every other program I opened in Win 8.1 official release worked as expected.

I just read, on another site, that X3c update was supposed to make X3 Windows 8.1 compatible and to be released "late October".  It is now (very) late October and it hasn't been released.

Possibly that is the answer, although X3a and b, 32 bit version IS Windows 8.1 compatible.

I'm going to let this hang for a while and hopefully Sonar will get their act together.  I've got recording sessions scheduled through the next week - two new 10 song CD projects and a remix on one I just finished.

Both X2 and X3 have to be installed as "Administrator" by right clicking on the Setup file
and selecting "Run as Administrator" just as Mudgel said.  This will allow the programs access to what
they need to be installed.  There were many errors when extracting files and running
installs without doing this.  I'd try this first, and if this fails, then contact support.

I'm running X3b on Win 8.1 without issue, but that's not to say that something in
your system isn't preventing it from installing.  Make sure Virus Protection is off also,
as this can also play havoc with the installation process.

Re: Unable to install 64 bit versions of X2 or X3a in Windows 8.1 October 31, 13 6:46 AM (permalink)
I have been installing or trying to install as Administrator, as mentioned in other posts on this thread. The 32 bit version installs and works without problems.   Being a computer tech, I have went beyond in trying to install or fix the original problem and it won't work.

I have two different PC's with Sonar 64 installed, one with X3b and another with X2 and they both have the same identical problems. They were working with Windows 8 and after the 8.1 upgrade Sonar now will not start with the "MSVC100.DLL error.  That was what started the attempt to reinstall as the notice from Windows was to reinstall the program to fix the problem.  The MSVC100.DLL file is in the two required locations and it is not a problem with the file, the problem is Sonar not being able to find/access the file.  I am not alone with this problem, it was reported by another person to Sonar support over a week ago.  I reported it to Sonar support on Monday, but they have not responded to either report.  I've seen other reports of this problem doing a google search, every one of them, that I looked at, says to reinstall the program.

I also work the Windows 8 forum and there are a couple reports of audio not working after Windows 8.1 upgrade and users not being able to reinstall the audio drivers.  I'm not sure what else.

Roland had to issue updated drivers for Windows 8.1 for their products to work.

As has been mentioned by someone else and what I found on another web site, X3c program update is supposed to address Windows 8.1 compatibility.  I'm going to have to wait for that and see what happens.

I wonder if it's the version of MSVC100.DLL coming into play...

Googling turns up quite a few scenarios where this c++ redistributable is the focus.

Re: Unable to install 64 bit versions of X2 or X3a in Windows 8.1 October 31, 13 8:28 AM (permalink)
I've addressed the MSVC100.DLL versions and that is not the problem.  The versions I have in Win 8.1 are identical to the versions I had in Windows 8 when Sonar X2 and X3 worked (and are identical to the versions I have in Windows 7 that X3b 64 bit works OK in)  Actually, I've been through every scenario that I can think of (many not mentioned here) and nothing makes a difference. The error message about that DLL is to "reinstall Sonar".   I can go back to Windows 8 with a Macrium drive backup and it will work, but that is not the answer, as that was something I tried - rebuild the drive from a pre-8.1 backup and Sonar X3b working then reinstall the 8.1 upgrade.

My only answer (and possibly for others with the same problem) for a fix for the 64 bit version is to wait for the overdue "c" update which is supposed to address 8.1 and see if that fixes it.

I originally started this thread in case others had the same problem (and there are others from posts).

    Gotcha....

I installed X3b before I did the upgrade to Win 8.1, so maybe that is why I didn't see the problem.

Maybe roll back to Win 8, install the 3b patch, and then do the 8.1 upgrade.

    Just a thought...

    EDIT: Saw you tried this...

Well X3c was a bust.  It has the exact same problems as X3a and b.  I'm still getting the same error when I try to run X3 64 bit in Windows 8.1.  X3c installed ok on my Windows 7 installation (but I wasn't having any problem in Windows 7).

Sorry you are having an issue. May I suggest a quick call to our support line. Perhaps, they can try to iron this out for you? Hope we can get this resolved soon.

I submitted an e-mail support request Monday morning.  I've heard nothing yet.  That was after I opened CWBRN-10980 that was immediately closed and directed me to contact support.  Another user, that has posted on this thread, sent a tech support request over a week ago for the exact same problem and has not heard from support.

Some with 8.1 are working OK and some are not.  I don't know how many of those that are working OK have the 64 bit version installed.  As I've previously noted the 32 bit version installs and works OK.  I have two Windows 8.1 systems (totally different hardware) that have the exact same problem - one with X3b and the other with X2.

EDIT:  I looked at the list of fixes/enhancements in X3c and there is NOTHING mentioned about Windows 8.1, as has been suggested on here and other web sites.

    FIXED!

I had tried this, or something similar, before from a link I found doing a google search but it didn't work.

I found this on the Windows 7 forum, on a link that people with Adobe Photoshop were having the exact same problem with the "MSVCR110.DLL"  error and program not starting.  One of the posted responses with a link (shown below) was the fix.  I tried it with Sonar X3 and Windows 8.1 and it fixed it.  However, MSVCR110.DLL was already in the correct Windows folders, but apparently was corrupted.

    Here was the posted fix:

    "GOTO:
Download Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2012 Update 3 from Official Microsoft Download Center

I updated with the "VSU3\vcredist_x64.exe" file.
Shut down / Restart / CS6 loaded with the Nik plugin intact and no errors.

MSVCP110.dll is now in my C:\Windows\System32 folder."

Good to hear you got it fixed!    Having come across similar c++ redistributable issues at work I was fairly sure it was the file itself, but I've never come across a situation where the right version in the right location just didn't work.    Good to know.
