X3b Driver buffer change causes shut down of X3b
Hello I have just opened a Project that has 16 tracks of about 2hours of constant recording. Now I want to mix it up...So I went into the Edit/Preferences/ audio/devices...and selected the ASIO mixer app, which opens my Allen and Health mixer, where I can then change the buffer size and such...I put it up to 4096 just to make sure no cpu spikes occur in playback. When I finished doing that and closed the A & H mixer, in the audio /device window, I clicked on apply...and the software closes completely. I reopened Sonar x3b...the project I just opened was not in the recent list, so I opened a new project, and selected the project again, of which I recently saved after the long session....And did the same choice with buffer selection in the Audio /device /ASIO pannel...and Sonar X3b again closed down...no sign, no warning, no windows to alert of any problem...Poof. I tried it once again,...again the most recent Project does not display what just was loaded...and or what was done in recording a few days ago with Sonar x3b....SO I have to open a new, and direct to the new Project...it opens , slow redraws,...long wait period (normal???)....I played back the tracks...Yep some hick ups with cpu spikes, and audible drop outs when the cpu s****s occur...(all Cores Spike up)....after about an hour going through the session in play back...I try to push up the buffer again...and You guessed it...Software Just closes, Just like that...poof. Not sure but I tweaked the hell out of my system, and it should be running lean ...So I am not sure what is causing the cpu spikes...nor is this proper behavior of the software...if this feature Buffer changing is allowed and the path is there to do so....and it is my only option through which to change Buffer size change in software...Then why the Poof poof?

Thanks CakeAlex....Hmmm...Yes onwards and upwards is what causes issues these days...it seems. Will try, but I am sure a x3e,f,g and the excellerated x4a is around the corner. Seems Cpu spikes are still noted in X3c...Just waiting on word of solutions here on the forum...Before I plunge in and drown in the soup de Jour. Sir Les

If you're going to run a buffer that high you'll probably need to increase you disk buffer size, too. Shouldn't cause a crash, but might be part of the problem.

it sounds like you're changing the buffer with your project open. Have you tried changing the buffer with no project open, or for that matter with Sonar closed? That should help determine what's causing crashes. Nonetheless, it should be possible to change it with the project open. In X2 I see that Sonar needs a bit of time or something to adjust, but it never crashes.

Yeah, play around with your playback buffer in SONAR. This might call for a little more trouble shooting or it may be your A&H driver. Maybe check for an update on their site (?). Don't think you should have to use such a large ASIO buffer, but I guess it shouldn't make a difference or cause a crash either.
Kind regards, Living Room Rocker

This is interesting. I had the SAME happen in X3b and X3c and NEVER (sorry about the caps but it's true) had that happen in X2a - changing ASIO buffers never crashed a project! Well, I blamed it on installing a new Octa-Capture driver (V.1.5.2) and thought that was causing it - now someone gets the same issue with totally different hardware. Pls file a problem report! Anyway, I rolled back on the OC driver (just to be sure); will be observing this further - but one thing I have already noticed that the project does not play back at certain buffer settings anymore (=total silence with jumping meters!), but with no logical connection between buffer settings and silence (i.e. smallest buffer works, next 2 higher settings don't, then one is working, then again silence ...) Yet another one of the odd things discovered with the X3 series - not so happy with it yet. Stabilitywise it's way below X2a and despite the 100 fixes from X3b to X3c, I don't notice much improvement in stability (still getting "random" crashes i.e. when using standard features that were there in X2 ...)

Thanks all...Well the reason I put that buffer so high is to reduce the anomalies the cpu spikes cause when playing back my recordings...They once added to the recordings in X2a (on the tracks)....But after long and hard tweaking, troubleshooting, and reducing of devices, before and after X2a,..I seemed to have at least reduced the anomalies from being recorded, and moved to X3B...But that cpu meter still Spikes on all cores every now and then, causing drop outs in playback...hence the increased Buffer should resolve... ( I use a M500 Logitech gaming Mouse )= issues? Yes I can change the buffer through the A & H mixer app ...and no crash occurs of windows 7 64bit...it does take a bit of time for the app to change ( a exclamation mark appears for a few seconds in the applet)...and then it is done...I cannot open the applet with a audio DAW open..it locks the audio mixer app...If I have the daw open I can only change the buffer through the software using it....hence I go to preferences and devices, and change it through that feature...which isn't working for me...in X3B...but worked in X2a But when recording we set low, in playback we set high...closing down the software to change buffer size is possible, but the software gives us the opportunity to do so with out closing down the software (in principle) so as to allow for continual work flow. I have 16 tracks of recorded audio at about 2 hours...You realize closing out, and restarting...with redraws and scanning vsts is up to about 4 min have been noted. And once opened and such..is the software suppose to remember the last session?...seems the session I am working on was saved twice,...cause I have two CWA files I made for that session...it was the last session, and I have not opened any other...But Sonar is tied to a older projects cwa files...from X2A....when opening sonar...the selection in opening recent files...the recent files do not show up...but the older cwas do. I have not yet tried saving it again, as this Pooffing out of sight has me worried it will corrupt the files and track data. Yes so Moving forward...(we believe)...I will make the jump to light speed when my nav computer is ready for the update. Although I have no faith it will do anything for the spiking cpu problem, and now pooffing out when changing buffer sizes in said software. X2a did not poof out when doing this buffer size change...But it did not solve the problem either of anomalies being recorded or played back...and that made me tweak more and more the system and OS. Not sure I know about hard drive Buffer sizes and how to change them..(WD Black 1tb 32bit buffer).(if you can explain and direct?)....But will look into that...as a hack, I have some drives indexing turned off....as Avid tech requested I Do....I asked many times if this was a problem on these forums with sonar...and got nothing in reply...to answer it or address it outright. Thanks so much for taking the time to respond to my hair pulling and teeth chipping rants. How does one make a report?....If one cannot isolate the culprit outright?.....and isn't this forum for such things to help come to conclusions and then make a report if it is valid and can be reproduced by others?...Seems we have some coming out of the bushes today......Perhaps now a report is due.? Oh I see a thread on how to make a report...I will do so asap. Now back to my meade and shrubberies! Sir Les
