Melodyne Wants 1024 Samples?

Hmmm...

This is the first time I received this message...

I just opened Melodyne to access the new update download... and a window pops up informing me that my DAWs buffer is set too low... It seems Melodyne "suggests" 1024 as it's claim that Melodyne "needs" it, and reluctantly adds that you may get away with 512 but dropouts are likely...

Should I actually pay attention to this? 1024 is quite a chunk of buffer. I'm running 8 cores and 16GB RAM...

What d'ya think?

Thanks...
Keni

I get that message too, but yet it always seems to work fine.  Then again, I don't use it for long periods, just short audio fixes before it has a chance to screw up if it is going to.

Hi Keni. I'd say give it a try as is and increase it if you need to. Cheers.

You'll likely see less dropouts (if any) and less audible pops clicks (if any) running at the recommended buffer size. I've done fine at 128 when it was a small clip or 2 being adjusted. The larger your clips the more likely you'll need to run their recommended buffer size.

Keni, I've successfully used Melodyne at 96 samples in my FF 400.  As with V-Vocal, I only process short clips and bounce them down as I would with VV.  It's never hung up on me, yet.

    All the best,

I agree with most of what has been said here, especially Seth.  I merely ignore the warning and trudge on.  Of course, I also work in small segments of clips...

I started out with nothing and I still have most of it left...

Keni, I've worked with an entire vocal track at 512 and had no problems at all, but I didn't have too tweak too much because the singer did a really good job. I think I only adjusted 5 or 6 notes in the whole track. Not sure if that makes a difference or not.
I'd just go for it and if it doesn't work adjust as needed.
    Good luck!

Another one who ignores it and just carries on. I always only ever work on small clips anyway.

Celemony has always recommended 1024 for the buffer size when using Melodyne.  They probably figured it would cut down on support issues if they put a notice about it, since that is first thing they ask you when you say you're having problems.  If it's working for you with less than the recommended then I'd say continue doing so.

I've been using Melodyne/ARA in the 128 range since S1 v2 originally came out, and continue to do so now in X3.   I can't say I've ever come across any issues because of it in either DAW.  FWIW, my clips usually range from about 1 to 20 seconds.

I run at 128 (IIRC) and typically don't have a problem using Melodyne. I'm usually only editing small clips though, not a full score.

If I do get any hiccups I bump my samples.

I've been using Melodyne for a number of years with Sonar and was a Beta tester for them when there was a problem with a memory leak between Sonar and Melodyne that took a long time to fix (me and Skyline on this forum and it turned out to be a Melodyne issue). It was around this time, this recommendation came from Melodyne. Since the fix was made over a year ago, buffer size is does not seem to be critical at all. In fact when I was using Sonar and Melodyne post fix, i felt that I had access to such a special set up. And now Sonar integrates it in Producer for all !!!.  No benefit for me but it is for nearly every other Sonar use,r so you guys now have integrated access to truly 2 great software progs. To be clear I run at whatever buffer size I want and it works now. So agree with the other posters.

    Hope helps

    Wow!

My humble thanks to everyone for chiming in on this... Lots of good info as well as experience/opinions.

You have all convinced me of what I suspected so I will ignore the warning and just remember that if I start experiencing any problems when running Melodyne, it's a good item to check/test...

I typically do very short bits of correction. If a track/performance needs much more than that I'd probably opt to re-sing it... But there can be times................. ;-)

I've had mostly very good results in the past using V-Vocal and have always dreamed of getting Melodyne.... Now I'm 2/3 of the way there. I have a working copy of essentials (single-track?) and now dream of one day upgrading it to full Editor!

    Thanks Cakewalk!

    ...and all the Cakewalk Team!

......oh, and very important. To all the Forum Members who are always willing to help out other Sonarites in need!

I usually increase to 512 on larger clips. Like others here, I don't adjust for smaller clips.
