Oh Norton how I love you... let me count the ways:
1) Run Norton Antivirus Uninstaller watch it report that it has successfully uninstalled everything. I give it an A+ for graphics. Really slick! 2) Restart wonder why Norton it is not actually gone 3) Download the Norton Removal tool 4) Run the Norton Removal tool.Chuckle at the idea that the Norton Removal tool has a "captcha" safety step. I guess Norton doesn't think their anti virus and malware protection is all that secure. :-) 5) Restart and wonder why the notification area still has Norton notifications 6) Search with RegEdit for Norton and or Symantec 7) Lose count while trying to add up all the associated keys that are laying about. 8) Reflect on the idea that the Norton Uninstaller made a point of asking me why I was removing my Norton free trial. Chuckle. "Love" may be too strong a word. After I'm done with that I'm off to ferret out all the Toshiba slowdown ware. It's been so much fun I took a break and went out and washed the mini van. Good times. best regards, mik

Norton Motorcycles? I don't know much about motor bikes but I can appreciate them. :-) I just learned how to use RegEdit to change "owners" of keys so that I could then give myself "permission" to nuke them. Norton took the liberty of considering itself a "trusted installer". I'll never understand why an installer can't be written to uninstall all the stuff it installs. It just seems like salt on a scar when they leave a lot of junk behind that you have to ferret out manually. Moving forward.

The worst virus I ever had - that is the one that was the most difficult to remove - was Norton Antivirus. Never again Norton anything on one of my machines!

First thing I did even before connecting to the internet was use a USB stick install the latest Wacom tablet driver. Then I installed the latest CCleaner and uninstalled Norton. Then I installed MSE. Then I connected to the internet and updated MSE. Then I updated Windows. After that I noticed that Norton was still hanging out. I think I got everything but a reference to ccSvcHst.exe which is embedded inside taskbarcpl.dll so my Notifications Area Icons dialog persists in showing me the skeletal remains of links to ccSvcHst.exe. I have found many people who would like to learn how to eliminate that but no one seems to know how. I think it's in the .dll so RegEdit will not help with that. Oh well... I think I got most of the rest of it. :-) best regards, mike

Norton sucks. I will not allow it to be installed on any of my computers. Norton used to be the best before Symantec bought it and ruined it.

After all of that with Norton (I know I went through it also - regedit and everything) (next computer I buy is going to be from the dealer that puts on the OS and sells the computer and makes them like my XP computer I bought, which did not have any of that stuff on it - any of it before) it helps to learn about the computer by getting up: Control Panel ->Administrative Tools and selecting -> System Configuration (right click and select Open) and going through that also and also what else may be there not to start (little update programs starting all the time) or start on the computer. And then again more work perhaps in the Registry and any of that perhaps (because there was nothing else to do with these type of people in the world!). But when it changes again (when you need to update always again ) then it will be there again as the default set by some of these programs.

I'll never use anything Norton again. I use Eset for my antivirus (has been great - not free though) and Glary Utilities for all things system-maintenance related (and it's free!).

Well phooey... I'll be the black sheep and say I love Norton Internet Security (Firewall and AV). Doesn't give me any problems at all. I can, though, understand about all the left-over detritus after an uninstall. It's way worse since the days of Vista. You'll get leftover data in %APPDATA%, in either LocalLow, LocalHigh, or the Roaming subdirs. You might also have to check both the .default and Public user %APPDATA%'s too. You'll need to check your program directories, there's probably the data equivalent of candy wrappers and Mountain Dew bottles left in there too. Last but not least, as noted, there's all the crud left festering around the Registry. It's a job to track down the references, and since time immemorial programmers have neglected to delete registry entries on application uninstall. I usually run 'Clean your Disks' and 'Clean your Registry' provided by none other than....wait for it..... Norton Utilities.

I don't trust MS AV all that well, it's just not as smart as catching web-based trojans, and I don't plan on disconnecting this particular machine from the web.

Mike, sorry to hear about your Norton woes. I had Norton once. I tried to upgrade it but it would not upgrade. Symantec's solution was to uninstall the version I had then install the new version. Unfortunately the old version would not uninstall. That was many many years ago but I have never used their software since.

In my old days of technical support I got written up for accidentlaly trashing Norton to a customer. Basically I said ... if the product doesn't work, why are you paying for it? At the time, the product was locking up the email ins and outs from any email client, instead of fixing the problem, or suggesting how to go fix it ... like telling the customer to go online and remove the email that says "blah and blah with viagra", so the program will allow the rest to download! It is a part of support that is hard to work with and one of the reasons why most people stopped doing Internet Support across the country, because too many of these products are not "guaranteed" to work, and in AMERICA, you HAVE THE LICENSE TO ROB PEOPLE WITH THESE PROGRAMS, up to and including Microsoft and Apple! Microsoft I have been able to deal with, but it has to go through the AG in the State of Washington, because you can't get through otherwise. They do not talk to their technical support, and that means that they don't want to know about the issues, and neither will discuss they discuss with people on the street in a call center! Apple, I have never been in love with the fake blonde with falsies and make-up!

While I am glad you are happy with it, I find it hard to believe that it has changed in the last 6 months, which is when I removed it from my father in law's computer in order to speed up his system, which it did!

It hasn't, really, excepting the 2014 update that just came out. I'm not running anything special here, just an AMD quad-core. Anyway, it's really a moot point - I don't know your father in-law's configuration in detail and you wouldn't know mine - so we're left with personal views of the situation. I do claim to run a tight-ship, though. I keep abreast of programs designed to run in the background, and which services I have enabled.

Hi, I have been using F-Secure for 8 years now, and have never had an issue with it. However, I do NOT do mail programs, and won't have them on my computer. That is no Outlook, or Outlook Express or crappydownloader of mail! The question you have to ask yourself is ... why are you downloading garbage into your computer? When you have that answer, you will no longer do email on your computer, and instead ALWAYS will use Webmail (on your provider's computers instead!!!!!!), and this will make your experience a lot easier to deal with all around. There will still be an issue or two, and once a year Microsoft has a bad word or two in their code, and boom, Google and 100 other websites get into your computer through it (rootkits) and sometimes these can be a hassle, but in general, the Professional versions of Windows (for business!) are much more secure in these areas, because it could hurt their business ... in the Home editions, it's always "end-user" and not anything else. Some folks have this idea that "rootkit's" only come from porno web sites and such, but that is not the case. It is a "process" that Microsoft, Apple, and all of these anti-fuch programs use, but some companies can do it, and others can't! So, next time, you think that pornos are hurting the internet and its security, think again!

The 'Home Edition's' are, IMHO a trade off. Too many people will b#tch about security options and call them nuisances. So the vendor's make these versions for them. That's fine by me - all you can tell them is that they have been 'educated' (and count the cash you'll be making cleaning up their future fiasco... )

And I will say ... enjoy cleaning out the trash all the time! It just depends on how secure and clean you want to be. But you're not gonna go very far doing music with one of these attitudes. You have to take it a bit more seriously than that! Even if your name is Neil Innes!
