New ‘king of gore’ tyrannosaur species unveiled in Utah
Think the Tyrannosaurus rex was tough? Meet its great-uncle, whose name means "king of gore." Paleontologists unveiled a new species of tyrannosaur, Lythronax argestes, on Wednesday at the Natural History Museum of Utah. The 80-million-year-old sharp-toothed skeleton was unearthed in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. The 24-foot-long dinosaur walked on two legs like the T. rex in a swampy, subtropical coastal setting. It weighed some 2.5 tons and had a large head with a relatively narrow, short snout that widened at the back of the skull, giving its forward-facing eyes a great view for spotting prey. A team of scientists from the Natural History Museum and the Grand Staircase National Monument discovered parts of the skull, hips, leg and tail during an excavation in March and May of 2009. http://www.sltrib.com/slt...ronax-history.html.csp

Quite a find. I'm sure glad the critter is extinct. Ok ....maybe not as long as I lived far far away from it.

Despite his ferocious appearance, razor sharp teeth, and gruff demeanor, Headonastickicus did not last as long as you might think.

Just be glad there was no room for these guys on the Ark! Although they did manage to save all the intestinal parasites. I've always wondered where they got the pair of tapeworms.

OK, but an adult T-Rex was about 40' long and 12' tall at the shoulder... this new dino isn't the king. Wouldn't you love a chance to see a live theropod dinosaur? Not too close though lol. I keep thinking that one day someone will un-ice one in the artic permafrost somewhere. You know the wolly mammoth was not a cold weather beast. It has no oil glands like a polar bear to keep the water and cold out. The frozen mammoths they have found have fresh daiseys in their stomach... they were flash frozen, so quickly that the meat is still edible. King of gore... ehhh T-Rex or this guy: Saurophaganax at 40' and 3 to 4 tons. I wonder about them.. whether they were more active hunters or more carrion eaters. Those little front "arms" seem so.. out of proportion to everything else.

Scientists say that dinosaurs evolved from birds--or do I have that backwards. Either of those T-Rexes would have some nice drumsticks if you could find a pan big enough to fry them in.
