Comprehensive Guide for X3 ... use the X1 or X2 POWER COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE
I am a relatively new user. Just upgraded to X3. Used X1 for simple piano MIDI. Now using X3 to edit audio files for band. I borrowed a copy of Scott Garrigus' "SONAR X1 POWER! The Comprehensive Guide". Should I buy the same book, or should I get the X2 later book? I understand the X3 book will not be available for a few months. Thx.

X1 Power is still pretty valid but a lot of things, especially in regards to editing, changed in X2. However they have done a few more changes like the comping stuff for X3. Considering X1 didn't even have Take and Automation lanes yet I'd imagine X2 Power would get you closer to where you need to be with X3... but I haven't read X2 Power. Knowing Mr. Garrigus though I'm sure it is spot on. Basically it seems to me the difference between X1 and X2 was more drastic than the difference between X2 and X3 and the difference between X1 and X3 is obviously even more significant. IMO X2 Power is probably your best bet if you can't wait for the new edition. Cheers.

Thank you and I do. The Sonar videos are produced by SWA and are available from the CW store or direct from the SWA website.

I got fbb's SWA videos on new features for X3 last week. It's excellent. He packs a lot in. I pause the video after every few minutes to mentally consolidate before moving on, because he doesn't let any grass grow under his mouse!

I haven't seen FBB's clinic vids but if they are of the same quality as his Effects Workshop it will show you everything in extreme detail. Aren't those vids like 9 freaking hours? lol... I really should pick that up at some point. Other vids to watch for are anything by Eli Kransberg on Sonar (groove3). He'll get you sorted nice and quick and seems to have an interesting take on the program. Lots of unique approaches. Not quite as thorough as Scott or Karl though. More of a "things you need to know to get goin" type thing.

Sorry Karl. I couldn't remember where your videos were marketed and I should have checked before typing! I have your video for X2 and LOVE IT!! Great stuff. Planning to purchase the one you did for X3, but am having trouble with my internet computer: it won't up or download anything right now. Hell, I can't even watch a video on this thing! AND it's getting terribly s l o w ....... Time to call tech service ......

Thanks for your support again Beepster. Yes the X2 video is nine hours and is as detailed as the FX video, perhaps even moreso. I'll let others judge the quality. The X3 video is much shorter at around 2 hours. The subject coverage is as detailed as the X2 video but covers the X3 new features rather than the whole program. joel77

Okay, this is very good info to have because I'd rather have the walloping 9 hours of detail if it's an either/or situation. I've looked at the Cake X3 promo vids and I'm pretty sure most of the changes I can sort out easily. In fact I think aside from perhaps some of the finer details regarding Melodyne I've already got a good handle on X3 without even having used the program yet. Seems the biggest change really was comping and that looks easy peasy... as it should be. Best of luck and darnit stop being so bloody humble/shy! It's quality material. Shameless plugs is the name of the game, my friend! ;-p

I concur. I bought the Groove3 videos for X3 and they're definitely a big help, especially in covering the changes in the UI which is quite different from X1's. As a bonus, Groove3 videos will give you a leg up on Melodyne and comping.

Beepster aside from perhaps some of the finer details regarding Melodyne Come to think of it, the videos on Celemony's site are what you'll want to go through to get a really good handle on Melodyne.

Definitely. I skimmed a few of those last week to check out the differences between Essentials and Editor and from the list of vids I'm sure it would take very little time to get acquainted with Melodyne. It does however seem to be be the type of program while although relatively simple you would need to know specifically where things were hidden and what actions to take to complete a task. Not sure why so many companies take such strange approaches to the simple things these days when there are so many more traditional and intuitive methods that could be used. I can only assume it's to avoid patent trolls or some weird need to be "unique". Personally I think it's a pain having to keep so many wildly varying methods in my brain but whatever. If it does what I need then I'll do the work. Friggen' patent trolls.

Thanks for the mention. For those interested, here is a link to the groove3 videos on Sonar: http://www.groove3.com/str/cakewalk-training-videos/ I have two separate series out on Sonar X3 specifically. Sonar X3 Explained gives a general over view of the app; touching on all the important fundamentals to get you up and running from launching the program to completing a mix. The second X3 series I have out, Sonar X3 New Features, as the title suggests - covers the new features in X3 specifically. Eli

Must be a pretty great friend to let go of his X1 power book! :-)
You can get a pretty good start with that, the sonar help files and the forum (of course).
You can help yourself in the forum by including details about your software and hardware in your forum signature. Then you won't have to answer the same questions so often. By this... What kind of computer? What kind of interface? What version of Sonar (producer, studio, basic) etc.

Hi Gary, Thanks for asking! If you need a book right away, get SONAR X2 Power. But it won't include any of the X3 info or any changes upcoming in the updates that Cakewalk has been releasing for X3. All of that will be covered in the X3 Power book. But yes, it's still a few months away. Sorry about that! Best, Scott PS. Thanks to everyone for the kind words about my work! +1 for Eli's X3 videos from Groove 3. I have both. His Melodyne Video is great, too. The X2 Power book would do you well with X3, but I would be tempted to hold on to your friends X1 book for as long as possible, and buy Scott's X3 Power book when it comes out. Speaking as some one who actually has X1, X2 and X3, the X1 book will get you a lot of the way there,. Watch Cake's Seth Perlstein's "Transitioning from X1 to X2" video, Eli's X3 video (and maybe the X3 New Features) and you'll be fine. That should keep you going until Scott's X3 Power comes out. Which you should then buy.

All three of these authors (of books/videos) are good! I have to second that Eli's Explained videos are most excellent! You can't go wrong getting his Explained videos! They cover a lot, and you can learn by sight and sound. Man, Eli is really very good! :) Karl's X3 new features videos are good. And, of course, get Scott's X3 Power! book when it is released.
