X3-B-Omnisphere-multitimbral-recording separate tracks/voicings Omnisphere Mult/Mixer tab
Hello All, A perplexing issue that's turning me a bit bonkers as I can easily do this with DimPro and others thanks to the assistance of Mettelus. I am trying to set Sonar/Omnisphere to be able to record individual tracks (midi/audio) with different patches/voices using 1 instance of Omnisphere and it's Multi/Mixer section and the assignable Channels/Outputs. I did find a forum post that directly spoke to this and followed those setup steps, but to no avail. What occurs is that I can record midi (strings) on the 1st midi track and it plays back nicely, all controllable via the MCU. When I set the 2nd midi track and set a different voice (soprano vocals), there is no sound heard, nor recorded. Things are set as follows: In Soanr x3b I did as follows: (this from a Forum post on how to sort this out) 1. added Omnisphere via browser - Midi Source, Synth Track Folder, all synth Audio Outs Stereo which gave me Track Folder, 8 stereo audio tracks, assigned A to H and one midi track, no channel 2. cloned 7 more midi tracks, select all new midi tracks and moved to the track folder folder 3. assigned midi channels 1 thru 8 on those midi channels In Omnisphere Multi / Mixer tab set as: 1 Ch 1 / Out A - individual voicing (strings) 2 Ch 2 / Out B ditto (vocals) 3 Ch 3 / Out C ditto (bass) 4 Ch 4 / Out D ditto (etc....) 5 Ch 5 / Out E ditto 6 Ch 6 / Out F ditto 7 Ch 7 / Out G ditto 8 Ch 8 / Out H ditto on midi track (9) recorded string passage - recorded, and plays back nicely. Sonar shows routing as In=All Inpts C1 (Ch 1) Out = 3Omnisphere1 which is the only available out for Omnisphere - other outs are MCUPro USB 3.1, KeyStation 88 and 'drum map' - InputEcho=auto-thru set midi track (10) voicing via Omnisphere Multi/Mixer tab which shows as CH 2 / Out B patch = Soprano vocal. Sonar routing shows as All Inpts C2 (Ch 2) Out = 3Omnisphere1. when this track is selected InputEcho= auto-thru is active and REC button will toggle on/off via mouse or MCU I hear no vocal sound on this track from Omnisphere when triggered via KeyStation on midi track 10 (soprano vocal) - I tried various other routings with no joy. In theory I would think this should work. As I mentioned I found the post on this setup from the forum and suspected it would resolve this. I want to be able to use 1 instance of Omnisphere, record a track, play back that track and record another in typical 'old school' fashion. I also want each track controllable/mixable via the MCU Pro. I feel I am missing something very simple here, but just don't see it. Any and all help is always greatly appreciated. Thanks and best Regards to All ! Bill CHO Virginia

Bill,
(I'm not at my PC now - but can do screenshots later...) This should definitely work. When you set the output of a MIDI track, I think you should have 8 Omnisphere outs to pick from. That's the only way it's gonna work. The problem is - I set this up ages ago, and saved it as a track template - so I don't remember exactly how I did it. The point is - what you're trying to do is *normal* ;-) and it *will* work.
If we have to resort to screen shots we will, but first you need to have a "omnisphere output 2" (or B or whatever) to use as the output of your MIDI track 10 (on MIDI ch 2). Then just select this track - and play...

Just a guess, but since you set the midi track to receive on channel 2 you need to set the keystation to send on channel 2.

swamptooth you need to set the keystation to send on channel 2.
You shouldn't have to do this. As long as you're on the correct track in SONAR - it will "echo" on to the MIDI channel of the SONAR track...

Hey Bill, I was wrong (I told you it's been a while, and I was thinking of Kontakt with multiple outs) - I actually only use 1 Omnisphere output, and then use 8 different MIDI tracks to trigger the different Omnisphere "parts". Omnisphere looks like this then the SONAR tracks look like this I couldnt capture the pulldown lists though - so in "outputs" there is only one "Omnisphere" to pick from, and for the MIDI channels there are a list to pick from. Maybe you should try to load Omnisphere with just one output? Or else if you prefer th emultiple outputs - then my original post still stands - there should be 8 different Omnispheres (A-H) to pick from in the "output" pulldown menu on the SONAR track...

Hey Bill, Funny thing is I clicked on this thread thinking "My god... what a title!" and then my name is in the OP, lol. I do not have experience with Omnisphere, so John is better authority than I am. One thing did come to mind when I saw you mention "Channel 10"... by default this has historically been used for drums. Another thing to check quick is "Edit->Preferences->MIDI->Instruments" Notice when you click on a channel on the left it outputs to an instrument definition on the right. 1-9 and 11-16 should all map to the same synth. When you click Channel 10 it will map to a drum set. Try setting Channel 10 to the same synth the others are on. I thought this can be overridden in the track view, but am too tired to remember well. In your OP, I got that track 9 worked, but were 1-8 okay as well for you? If track 10 is the only culprit check out the mapping quick. Michael

@john - you've got your midi inputs set to omni. the op has his set to channels. "Sonar routing shows as All Inpts C2 (Ch 2) Out = 3Omnisphere1." bill, if you have your routing set up like this you need to change the midi channel on the keystation. this is how i switch synths in live shows, having all midi tracks echo and record enabled i just switch channels on my controllers to play a different synth. alternatively, you can set the midi inputs to omni and echo and record enable one track at a time, but it doesn't sound like that's what you're shooting for. if i'm reading you right this is your routing: see pages 279 and 316 in the reference guide.

Bill, please do report back. Omni/Trilian/RMX have all acted differently since I went from 8.5 to X1 (still on X2b) and there have been mostly minor irritations, but I can't get the A-H outputs working at all anymore on those instruments. It's a minor complaint, but I did wrestle with my Korg nanoKontrol for about 6 hours and Omnisphere no longer keeps the templates (including the one Spectrasonics made for it) and the results have been bizarre, but manageable. I went to the Spectrasonics FAC site and went through them, but I was led to a "help with daw" (sorta) chart and there was about 13 or so of them, and Sonar wasn't even on the list. This won't prevent me from upgrading to X3 because I want Addictive Drums and a new entry into Melodyne (had Cre8 back in the day) but when Spectrasonics rolls out new stuff and even hints that they have issues with Sonar I'll leave CW even faster than UAD2 guys are. I'm fine now though, but I've been waiting to hear about these issues from other Spectrasonics/Sonar users, but again my multis work fine on different midi channels so all is well, but again please do report back.

Hi swamptooth, There will certainly be a few ways to get this to work. You're right - all my MIDI inputs are always on omni - and my MIDI controller (a CS6X synth) is always set on MIDI Ch 1. I just use the SONAR echo(ing) to play out on the correct MIDI channel of the selected track. I don't know what Bill prefers - but this is a heck of a lot easier than changing the channel on my controller keyboard all the time ;-)

i hear ya, john. i used to do that a lot until i started using sonar live, and it's just easier to switch my channel up or down than it is to swing over to my laptop and change which track i'm targeting.

John, Arvid, Michael, DeClan, Thanks for all of your input on this. I'll be testing a number of things tomorrow after the leaves get blown ! I was able to find the 'popout' which does show the 'Channel A-right,Channel A Left, Channel A-Stereo - I was using the input/output on the pro-channel strip but located the proper place and the popout in track view - perhaps that was my thickness. Any way, I will post an update - once I get this sorted out I'll let everyone know. Thanks and Best Regards, Bill - CHO

Another option - I use guitar to midi to drive Omni most of the time & changing midi channels is a hassle so I have the 8 midi inputs all set up to receive on channel 1, but the channels (under the FX bin in the channel strip) are set to 1 - 8. I use the mixer in Omni to set up layers and channel mappings and then select the track I want to hear/record. The song passage at https://sites.google.com/site/phoenixtaiji/music has a fair amount of Omnishpere in it ...
