[Answered] Question about sending MIDI to external synth

I have MIDI out connected to the MIDI input of my external synth. In X3, when I play my regular (bigger, better) keyboard, the MIDI is routed to my synth, and I get sound from my synth -- that's good!

However, when I play the MIDI back (via transport), the MIDI in the track doesn't seem to be going to the synth -- I get no sound from my synth -- that's not so good, kind of inconvenient for me.

So, here are the three scenarios I've observed:

Scenario 1: Play notes on big keyboard -- Result: synth receives MIDI, and I hear the synth.
Scenario 2: Arm MIDI track (MIDI out is to synth) and audio track (input to audio track is audio from synth), press record -- Result: while recording, the MIDI notes that are in the MIDI track go to the synth, and I hear the synth. When I stop the recording, an audio clip is created in the audio track, which is recorded from the synth audio output.
Scenario 3: Press "Play" (i.e. space bar) to play MIDI notes in the MIDI track -- Result: I don't hear the synth; apparently the MIDI being played by the transport is not being sent to the synth.

I would like to change the outcome of scenario 3, so that when I press "Play", the notes in the MIDI track are sent to the synth. Is this possible? Sorry for the long-winded explanation. I hope this makes sense.

Thanks,
Mike

What midi interface do you have on your PC?

Basically you need a midi lead from midi out on your keyboard to midi in on your interface and a midi lead from your interfaces midi out to midi in on your midi synth.

Only this way can Sonar intercept the midi coming from your keyboard, record it, and play it back to your midi synth.

If you connect a midi lead direct from your keyboard to your synth then Sonar has no way of recording and playing back the midi data.

    SONAR Platypus on Win10 64bit.

In preferences, can you see your keyboard in the MIDI instruments panel?  If not, you may not have it hooked up for what you are trying to do.  You should be able to select your keyboard to send MIDI output to from the track if you have your configuration set right.

I have the Roland UM-1 interface. Works great. I use it to patch MIDI in from my Axiom, and out to my synth -- Sonar is in the middle, so to speak. To answer all your other questions, Shambler and gcolbert, please refer to my original post.

Again: playing notes on Axiom has the desired effect of playing through the synth; pressing play on transport, to play a MIDI sequence does not have the desired effect.

I found the answer: Preferences -> Audio -> Playback and Recording -> Disable Input Monitoring during Playback (uncheck this).
