Need mix advice, Work In Progress
Hey folks, I'm working on this song and I need some mix advice. I've never done a song like this before, it's a piano based ballad sort of thing and I usually just do the funk... Any and all advice on the mix is welcome. Also, do you think it needs lyrics (I have nothing in mind) or would it stand as it is? Many thanks in advance! https://soundcloud.com/rs...itled-work-in-progress

The mix is irrelevant at this point. It is a song, waiting to be a song. You know,,, lyrics........ But, you knew that. Sounds good Bob.

Like the melody... this has potential to be a great song!!! in my opinion the acoustic guitar is a bit to harsh, the snare is also a bit thin... and the piano,if taking center stage on the mix needs more width! Like i said love the melody !!! Pedro,

Sounds good so far... very soothing. I suggest changing the rhythm guitar sound to something more "jazzy" than "rockin'". Then it'll match up better with the nice piano bed you've got going on.

I can barely hear the acoustic guitar, as it sounds buried in the mix. Nice piano bed and electric guitar is nicely done. A really good start to this and some vocals always make a song a song. This is nice just as an instrumental also, but get the acoustic guitar up in the mix better. Very nice so far. Like the melody. Peace and Blessings, John

I always vote for vocals, and of course, for lyrics, too. A song is not a song unless there is vocal melody and a cool voice we all like to listen to - at least this is my humble opinion. The vocals could pretty much follow the piano melody, this should work out fine.

At around 0:28 and 0:31 it sound like the guitars sustain was edited out (a little annoying). I think the arrangement is nice. From about 1:42 through about 2:04 the Piano seems to dominate which is nice but the guitar sounds more like a buzz in the background. Might try to bring the guitar up in the mix during that section unless you are concerned the vocals that you'll be adding may not fit. I like the drum mix you have going on and the bass is well mixed as well. The lead sounds well thought out.

You have something nice going on here. I am always a sucker for a good hard driving instrumental but this number lends itself very nicely to a good melody with some nice lyrics. However, I look forward to listening to whatever you end up with.

Thanks so much guys for taking the time to listen and make such helpful, well considered suggestions. I really appreciate it. Well, I think I'm gonna try to put some lyrics to it but they'll have to be several notches above my usual "There was an old man from Nantucket..." type stuff. I may need to find someone to sing it, too, I'm not much of a ballad singer. Again, I truly appreciate the time you guys spent listening and making suggestions, I know everyone is really busy. THANKS!!

I agree with everyone else that this would make a good vocal song. I hope you repost this when you are done. Best of luck.

I think it needs lyrics. It has a longing feel to it. Maybe your girl is away, or whatever, and she's coming back? You can always check your mix by turning the volume way down and giving it a listen like that. You should be able to hear everything, but the low and highest end, at a low volume. So far so good!
