Cakewalk v5.0 for DOS
Well I just noticed someone put this on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWGUrQsJ7_U Brings back the old days. Just before Windows people were pushing DOS to it's limits. I started on Cakewalk Dos Ver3 way back, about 25 years ago. I bought a SMPTE card and I synced the thing to a Fostex 8 track reel to reel, so I could record audio. I used a Roland R8 for drums and a Yamaha TX 81Z and a Roland U-110 for sounds. My keyboard was a Roland Rhodes MK-60 (which I gave to a friend and it still works great). I guess I am really an old timer. BTW, sorry if there is already a thread showing this video.

Intresting - Its come a long way! I never used a DOS sequencer, at that time I was using hardware: A roland MSQ sequencer synced to a Alises drum machien and a Roland MC202 for CV and Gate and recording on a Foxtex portastudio. I started with computers using Cadenza on Windows 3.1 and moved on to Cakewalk when Cadenza went out of business.

I started as well with Cakewalk v. 3, Midiman I think the interface was called, and connected to a Roland D10. MIDI all the way!

There should be competitions for people trying to write music with that occasionaly!

Hehe, that video would be mine :) To tell the truth, I never sequenced with CW5 for DOS... that video was of the demo version of the program. I've been looking for a copy of the full version of CW5 though, simply to add it to my historical collection :) That being said I DO STILL use Cakewalk Professional v3.01 for Windows as my primary MIDI sequencer, even today :) Runs great under Windows XP (I'm assuming under Vista/7/8 if you run it under Microsoft's "Virtual Machine" as well, but I'm not sure about that one), and has EVERTHING that I need for my usual MIDI sequencing. I remember back in the day purchasing and installing CWP5 and CWP6... and I HATED them <puke>, compared to what I was/am used to with CWP301, and what I can do with it :) Anyhow, for the interested, three nice pics (CWP301) :) h[tEE][tEE][pEE][colon][forwardslash][forwardslash]jasonwilliams400com.startlogic[DOT]com/snor/weeds/SoundFonts/Cakewalk_Professional_v3.01_Advertisement.jpg h[tEE][tEE][pEE][colon][forwardslash][forwardslash]jasonwilliams400com.startlogic[DOT]com/snor/weeds/SoundFonts/Cakewalk_Professional_v3.01.jpg h[tEE][tEE][pEE][colon][forwardslash][forwardslash]jasonwilliams400com.startlogic[DOT]com/snor/weeds/SoundFonts/Cakewalk_Professional_v3.01_Faders_View.jpg (EDIT) Seems that I'm not allowed to post links in this message <AARRGGH>, editing with a roundabout method (copy/paste/edit the URLs where needed: you get the idea)...

It would be really cool if Cakewalk just gave away the DOS version, unsupported. It would be good for marketing and cost them nothing. I used to really enjoy midi, until it moved to windows. Plus, the memories...

I started with 2.0 for DOS and have upgraded with every version since. I striped one track of a 4 track cassette recorder with SMPTE to record audio and bounced tracks as needed. I was definitely hooked on recording with computers from then on. I was amazed then, and I am still amazed today at what we can do with DAW recording. I love technology. (I would love to have an original floppy copy of version 1.0 for DOS to complete my 'collection'.)

Agreed 100% :) That being said, I'm fairly sure that the powers that be wouldn't mind sharing this old DOS gem. The problem though... actually FINDING a copy of CW5DOS, as it seems to be virtually NON-EXISTANT :( pharohoknaughtyI used to really enjoy midi, until it moved to windows. Like I posted previously, I never had (or used) CW for DOS... although I did use Voyetra's "Sequencer Plus Gold" for a few years. After I first bought Cakewalk Professional 3.01 for Windows though, I never looked back... even still today :) CakeAlexSBetter still port it to phone... If I'm not mistaken, there have been several ports of "DOSBox" for various phones... which would run CW5DOS just fine :)

Hah hah hah! It looks beautiful in a sense. Though I used DOS, I do not remember having used any Cakewalk product for DOS or Windows in that time. I used another gem for music in Windows 3.1 and then Windows 95. I think it was called MidiSoft Studio. Ahh *sniff* I remember the good times (Life was also simpler than it is now.) What I liked a lot about MidiSoft Studio was the score editor. I think you could also import audio files to two tracks. Oh, the nostalgia. Oh, the joy, arrrgh If I could only find a copy of this software and relive the joy of that time...

I remember Cakewalk version 1.0. At the time I could not figure it out. I was able to sequence on a Roland MC500 and then the MC500mkII. It was fun learning all that. The sound gear were an RD5000, S550, M1r, Kurzweil ? and others. I think it was a Roland drum pad thingy. It had maybe 16 buttons you could trigger the different drums. Those were good memories. There's an interesting story there also involving Samuel French having it's lawyers send us a cease and desist order.
Notation, the original DAW. Everything else is just rote. We are who we are and no more than another. Humans, you people are crazy. Win 7 x64 X2 Intel DX58SO, Intel i7 920 2.66ghz 12gb DDR3 ASUS ATI EAH5750 650w PSU 4x WD HDs 320gb DVD, DVD RW Eleven Rack, KRK Rokit 8s and 10s sub
