The Way It Sometimes Goes

An original song recorded via Sonar X3.  Learned alot.  Love Addictive Drums!  Used several ProChannel modules on tracks and busses.  Hope you like it, and I appreciate the feedback.

All mixes are a subjective experience, bearing that in mind, for me the vocal sounds dry, compared to the band, consequentially it sounds in a different space to the band.

The band sounds very good and accomplished, as does the vocal.

    Thanks for sharing.

I agree with Wookiee.  The vocals don't sound as if they reside in the same room as the rest of the instruments.  I also think the Vox could be brought up front a little bit.  I think the instrumental blend was good although the tom sounds on the drums sounded a little boomy and coming out of nowhere.  I also noticed that there were no real harmonies perhaps that was as intended I have noticed this frequently in this genre (just a nit of mine).

Much of the time I just launch Audacity for a one-take at the kitchen table.  This is the 3rd or 4th song recorded with Sonar I think.  I'm basically a one-man-band, singer-songwriter type trying to give my songs some life with the tools and techniques I've learned here, on YouTube, etc.

Any advice on what to try?  Different verb on the vocal maybe?  I didn't use Tape Sim, but I did use Console Emulator on a couple of busses.  And maybe I'm not using the right setting on my monitors.  I had the HF cut by a couple of db and was at +6db on volume.

On the first export the vocal sounded weak, so I boosted it a couple of db.  I thought the level was okay, but I sure wasn't thinking in terms of space.

Several of my songs need harmony so I'm going to have to sing it or create it with plug-ins or have some friends over.

    Again thanks for the feedback.

Has a nice Lyle Lovett feel to it.  I really like this!  I don't think the vocal sounds bad at all, although perhaps it could just just a touch of reverb.  I've always liked a dry mix, and your excellent vocal can really stand up to it.

Nice little bluesy song and nicely done. Sounds like you may have already put a touch of reverb to it, but it all sounded good at this end. Nice work on the vocals.

I ' ve got nothing to complain! Just like Walt, I prefer a little dryer over a total wet, reverbladen mix. this makes it sound more "vintage" in my ears, and just suits with your song!

Re: speedtom and 'Little Cabin....' that was a one-take with Audacity, but I didn't think it pro enough for this audience, hope to put a Sonar version together, but I sure appreciate you listening and the kind compliment:)  There is such a cabin btw, it's still in the family.

I heard that it sounded a bit "Lo-Fi" if you like, but that didn't matter, because I could hear your voice, the guitar and the melody. Pro or not, that take has a great vibe, which might be hard to re-create even with the fanciest software.

I like it.  You have a very unusual and creative sound on this number.   I also don't find a problem with the vocals.  To me it has a nice "room" feel to it.
    Nice one.

    I like your voice.... it's a natural.

On the mix... the drums sound like they are slapping cardboard... not fat and full sounding... perhaps you compressed them too much?

On the vocals, all I can tell you is what I do. I tend to use a slight reverb on the main vocal... I'm in the habit of recording several tracks and using a vocal bus and that reverb sets in the bus. Not much... just a dash at this point.

In the master bus, I place another reverb which is also generally set fairly light.... but this one effects the entire mix together at the same rate. This blends things much better.   With reverb, you really don't need a whole lot to get a good sound. My rule of thumb (which I am free to violate as I see fit) is to turn it up to where I can hear it and then back it off to where I can't hear it very well, and leave it set there.  If in the final mix I think I need more, I'm always free to go in and bump it up a bit.... to taste.

I like the song and the dry vocal.  It sounds "in your face" and intimate.  The stereo spread of the mix works well on my speakers, and everything can be heard quite well.  Good job with the lyrics.
